Head crashes into build plate and destroying it while initial lidar scan

Hello everyone!

I have a strange problem with my X1 Carbon.

I started a print and the head completely distroyed my build plate.
The head just drove into the plate while doing the lidar scan before printing.
Before starting the print i checkt everything (clear sensor, greas, nozzle) and the printer didn’t complained about any malfunctions.
Now i’m scared to start a print again, fearing destroying my nozzle and the other side of the plate.

Bought in January 2024, worked fine since.
Fireware: 01.11.02.00
AMS V.1

One possible reason why this happens. Of course, I don’t know if this was the case for you. If you level the bed without the printer plate. Then it calibrates to the height of the heating bed rather than the plate, i.e. it ends up too low. From the photos, it looks as if he calibrated based on the heat bed and not the printer plate.

Shortly before you press print, the printer asks you if it should perform bed leveling. Did you activate it? Did you replace the printer plate while doing so?

As I said, that may not be the cause, but it could be one.

I had the plate inside the printer before hitting print, like always. so sadly thats not the reason.

I tried printing again and this time it works. But would be good to know if this was just a one of or a real bug.

A good troubleshooting step would be to rollback (1) firmware version then updating to the most recent firmware again. Now (Power Cycle After Firmware update!) I don’t care if the update triggers a restart, power cycle yourself manually. Then afterwards do a full system calibration and use your (now) newly established “Prototype Plate” lol because we’ve all had it happen and its the fastest way to see money fly.

I’ve had my printer for 2 years now as well, and all has been great until mine did the exact same thing today. It got done cleaning the nozzle tip, moved to do a couple taps of the build plate in the middle, and then moving over to the lidar area, drove the nozzle into the build plate placing a big scratch along the middle-right of the plate. I’m bummed because I just bought a brand new cryogrip frostbite as an upgrade from my original cool plate. I tried printing it again, but it did the exact same thing (good thing I didn’t actually flip my plate over).

So then I took the nozzle off, didn’t see anything but tried to wipe it down a little. I ran the calibration procedure on the entire printer. I went back to Bambu Studio and moved some parts around (thinking that maybe it didn’t like how I arranged something??), and then sent the print job back to the printer. It worked that time, but now I have a bad plate face :frowning:
