Help! AMS2 won't push out filament far enough to even reach the buffer

There did not seem to be a problem until just a couple hours ago.

The AMS2 will only push out filament to a set length now (~1.5 feet), which ends about an inch before the buffer, and then retract it repeatedly until it fails with:

Unable to feed filament into the extruder

I have:

  • Removed all tubes
  • Removed the tube connector from the back of the AMS2

Without any tubes, it still only pushes out the filament the same distance (About long enough to make a gentle arc towards the buffer, but not quite far enough to reach it). And then retracts.

Below is a video of the effect with a tube connected (Easier to measure the distance). The behavior has no change without a tube:

How can I further diagnose?

I assume you powered everything down and restarted? First thing I’d try anyway. Also, is it only one slot or do all of the slots do it as well?

I have tried powering everything off and trying to load the filament again. It still only pushes it out the same amount.

I did just find the HMS indicator that states:

AMS A slot 4 feeder motor is stalled

It has a link that sends me to a page with instructions for X1 though, and not the P1S

I just tried the other slots, they also exhibit the same behavior, and push the filament out to about the same location. The ā€œmotor stalledā€ shows for each slot.

What is REALLY weird, is that if I try and get a slot to read the spool, it will insert the filament the entire way all the way to the extruder while trying to read it. And then retract it the entire way. It fails to read the RFID for every roll of filament now, for some reason. So it appears to have no problem actually pushing the filament through :thinking:

This is quite weird since the reading behavior just earlier today was that it would spin the spool a bit back-and-forth to try and read. Not that it tries to feed until a timeout.

So, there appear to be two issues from this testing:

  1. When trying to read the RFID tag for a roll, it will feed filament all the way to the extruder, and try and push past it. Before eventually failing and retracting.
  2. When trying to actually load, it only pushes the filiment out a bit, then eventually retracts with a AMS A slot {n} feeder motor is stalled

Yeah, looks like plenty of folks have a similar issue. A good bit of that thread seems to be a problem with the hub (The 4-way buffer you attach to the back of the printer) specifically though, which conflates the problem a bit.

Yup, me too. Already in contact with support on it.

btw. I had to unscrew the inner part from the bottom, which went okay, but no matter what I do to fasten it again, the screws won’t go in :frowning:

Make sure it’s pushed down so it ā€˜clips’ into place

Have you solved the problem? I had my AMS 2 yesterday and am having the same issue.

In my caser it looked like the external AMS hub was defective. Now waiting for replacement to be arrive.

Did it take them long to come to this conclusion? I’ve removed the PTFE tube from the back of the AMS and it’s still only feeding out a small length of filament before it retracts it.
Did they have to receive the AMS back before they would ship the new one?

All in all it took a bit over 2 weeks, but that is mainly my own fault as I wasn’t always around to respond to their questions, and in between had other rl problems. I didn’t have to send the faulty one in. They need the order number.

it arrived yesterday, and so far it is working for me.

I just got the AMS2 Hub in the mail, swapped it out, and it also appears to be working fine for me as well.

Perhaps a faulty sensor on the hub?
