I have 2 p1p with enclosure kits fitted and 2 ps1’s 3 of the 4 are running well.
The one I have started having problems with started with gaps in the layers.
I am using a .4 nozzle with the 0.2 Standard settings in Bambu slicer. Bottom part is from the troubled printer and top is from one of my other printers. The top part was printed with the same nozzle and slicer file as the bottom part.
I Stripped the extruder unit down and found lots of dust and what appears to be debris from something inside, some looked like rust.
Cleaned it up and put it back together and next print was worse
In an attempt to diagnose the problem I swopped the extruder unit with another printer and ran a print job on both. They both came out well with no defects.
Any Ideas on the cause of the print quality problems? and if the debris is just a build up or extruder unit / stepper motor wear?
The printer are situated in a garden workshop fully insulated and heated to 18-22 degrees C. Humidity is controlled to around 40. The printer with the problem as done in excess of 4000 hours printing,.

Is that the extruder gear that came with the P1P/P1S or did you swap it out with the hardened steel version? Also, have you been printing any abrasive filaments or filaments that are infused with anything?

That looks like rust which is unlikely in the extreme because no components that will rust.
I just put in a stainless steel gear in my extruder and it had some dark grease to lube the gears with. If the grease got REALLY baked it can do that.
You might consider hosing down the entire extruder with some WD-40 and clean with a NYLON or other soft bristle brush. You need to clean that mess regardless. You always want your scrub brush to be softer than what is scrubbing.
Its the stock extruder gear that came with the printer. I have used about 700g of Bambu CF about 6 months ago, but mostly using Sunlu PLA.
Going to order a new extruder unit anyway to keep as a spare.
I cleaned it all off with a small paint brush, it was just dust and small debris. Still no idea where it came from.

700g isn’t a lot in the grand scheme of things but carbon fiber will chew though things pretty quickly. If you plan to print anything else abrasive in the future I recommend you get the hardened steel extruder and nozzle.
Update on the problem.
The troubled printer has now had the the extruder unit from another printer in it for 48 hours running with no problem until now.
Then rouge print with same gaps in the layers. Never had a stepper motor with problems before so don’t know if this is the problem.
Or do you think I should be looking further back along the line towards the AMS?
Just to note that the extruder unit unit with the debris inside has now been running fine for 48 hours in another printer.
