High Flow Nozzle on H2C

So I just got some high flow nozzles for my H2C. So now how do I use them? Will the printer automatically recognize them and adjust the speed? Or do I have to manually increase the speed in the slicer?

And are these really worth it?

You have to change the max volumetric speed setting in the filament settings along with a slider in the same filament settings that switches from standard to highflow in the upper portion of the settings. It will read your nozzles if you switch to the left / back to right extruder in the control menu (or vice versa)

Default is probably around 15mm/s. I run all HF nozzles at 30mm/s and it does reduce print times. Could probably go faster, but I’d take a little time loss over losing the entire print over quality issues. Could be a 25% or more time saver overall. Could be less. All depends on what you are printing.

But you need to really know the limits of your filament too. Just because it will push out that much more plastic doesn’t mean you’ll have a quality print. With speed you may also find yourself needing more bed / nozzle heat etc.

There’s a few max volumetric tests floating around that goes up to 50mm/s. You are looking for the limit before you start under extruding and then give yourself a little bubble to be on the safe side as a starting point.

So simply changing to HF in the settings, and upping your volumetric speed will speed you up.

Edit: I think they are worth it. Anything that helps being able to print more parts in less time will always pay for itself (to me).

Hi Jones,

You should make sure the high flow nozzle type is selected in the slicer when slicing your project (same place you select the nozzle size). This automatically adjusts certain settings in the slicer, selecting specific filament and/or printer profile settings specifically for high flow nozzles. In the project options there are also separate Speed settings for the two types, which in some cases are already pre-configured in the standard print profiles.

You can tweak the HF nozzle settings independently of standard flow nozzle type, if you want, as with standard nozzles. But the defaults typically work well already. You don’t have to adjust anything.

Don’t expect HF nozzle to always be faster. Part of the benefit is just that the HF design heats/melts the filament more thoroughly/evenly. Even w/out changing any settings this can result in cleaner prints and/or fewer clogs (eg. with more difficult filaments).

When sending the print, it should automatically select the/a installed high flow nozzle of matching diameter (from the rack). It’s good to verify this, of course.

Installing a HF nozzle (on H2 machines for instance), slicing for high flow, choosing high flow in filament settings etc., won’t increase speed.

You only increase speed by manually changing the default volumetric speed which is the same in HF and STD nozzles as that speed is what “limits” the printers ability to lay down plastic any faster.

It’s set at a fairly conservative level for a STD nozzle and very low for a HF nozzle.

Many (most?) of the BL filament profiles already include this change. Not saying it can’t be tweaked further, but the defaults are already adjusted. YMMV with “custom” filaments of course. Seems most/all Studio “Generic” filament profiles don’t make a distinction, so neither will anything based off of those, unless tuned.

However even with the max. flow increased, and the Speed settings turned up (like eg. in default 0.20mm Standard @BBL H2C profile with HF nozzle) the same model might not show any significant speed difference. A simple cube for example. Going to depend on the model, to some extent. Or IOW there may be other factors limiting overall speed.

Most people don’t run BL filaments. I’m sure BL ups their own profiles. But the Generic profiles, basically the only other filament option you get with an H2C, the STD and HF volumetric speed is identical throughout.

So the nozzles themselves don’t change speed at all, nor selecting them for every single type of filament besides BL, which would be the majority of people using the printer I would guess.

I wonder which of the two H2C nozzles types will be best for getting the highest flow - as the heaters and nozzle types are completely different I guess the max speeds will be completely different too.

I had to order a high flow 0.4 right induction nozzle because normal flow were out of stock - I think I will order a high flow left nozzle too - so that I can compare the two - unless other people have already done this.

Also I wonder whether the E3D left nozzle high flow are better than the Bambulab ones. The E3D ones are quoted as 60% faster than BL standard in the E3D data sheet, but there is no comparison with the BL high flow ones - which on other threads I have seen 62% quoted.
