This feature would be useful to me, but the documentation contains contradictory statements about supported horizontal/vertical holes. I don’t know what is right and what is wrong.
In the Bambu Lab Wiki (Auto Circle Holes-contour Compensation | Bambu Lab Wiki) it says this about ‘Auto Circle Holes-contour Compensation’:
Studio’s slicing algorithm will identify circular hole/shaft features that meet the criteria (only for complete circles on the horizontal plane, semicircles or circles in the vertical direction will not be compensated), and provide reasonable size compensation based on detailed test data.
But the specifications note (see Bambu Lab X2D: Affordable Dual Extruder 3D Printer for Easy Support Removal | Bambu Lab ) says:
Note: 5.Auto Hole/Contour Compensation: Auto Hole/Contour Compensation must be enabled in Bambu Studio and requires designated Bambu filaments. At present, only vertical circular holes are supported—horizontal, angled, or non‑circular holes are not yet supported.*
Does anyone know why do these two statements do not align?
And what could the expected timeline be for adding support for horizontal holes on the X2D?
As far as I am aware, hole compensation works for holes on the horizontal plane, which means the holes are vertical. I suspect there is just confusion in the language.
Automatic compensation is quite difficult as the algorithm can’t always figure out what needs compensation and what does not. Is that a screw hole or a cylinder for a piston? They would be compensated differently.
You can put a Bambu RFID on a regular spool to get it to detect as Bambu filament; you can adjust the print settings manually from there if it’s not right.
If you are designing your own parts you should use DFM (design for manufacturing); when you design 3d printed parts, you take this into account. (e.g an M3 fastener clearance hole of 3.2mm should be around 3.4 to 3.5mm using DFM). Of course this does not help when printing other peoples models. It is helpful to buy the appropriate drill sizes to drill out tight holes.
Yes - I think you are right, it must be a language confusion. And I had to read this a few times myself before I really understood what you meant - ‘holes on the horizontal plane, which means the holes are vertical’.
I do use DFM and adjust, but it is still trial and error to some extend. I will need to play with Automatic compensation and see where it goes.
