Is there a way to connect a P1P or P1S to a Hidden WiFi Network with no security (no password enabled on the network)? I dont have the ability to make the network hidden.
I saw that I can use the wifi config file but it also requires a password which my network doesn’t have.
Why no password? Security through obscurity is not a good thing. I’m not going to lecture you on it, but the WIFI will still send out requests that can be read which contain the SSID. Unless you live nowhere near anyone else, or the network is totally locked down you’re potentially asking for trouble.
Im no network guru but your router SSID is the password that allows a device to gain access to the local network whether it is wifi or hard-wire ethernet cable.
The router is also what allows the greater internet to pass through on its way to a devices software.
You have devices that communicate with each other and the internet via the the router and its associated SSID. An old school Epson printer communicates locally with your laptop or PC this way
You also have whatever software you possess that requires a separate logon and password. Those are two different things.
In a company based scenario, the IT people quite often do not give out that SSID to unauthorized employees. So if that is your scenario, that may be an issue. Not so much that you do not have a password/SSID but rather you don’t know the password.
No SSID on the router would be beyond risky if you are accessing the Internet through that router because that opens your local network to malicious actors which are constantly seeking access to just that type of hacking. If you have ever heard of DDoS attacks, unprotected computers are part of that workflow. Zombie Computing/Computers
Many malicious attacks are accomplished by finding computers wide open to the internet.
To use the analogy of a locked door. Simple passwords are like an unlocked door. No password at all is like not even having a door. You are wide open to everyone looking inside at all your possesions.
I have been involved in three different hacks, none of which accessed my computer. Malicious actors broke into the computers of 1) Target, 2) ATT , 3) AutoZone and downloaded the customer contact info.
Somewhere in that process they may have used random computers scattered across the globe as part of their attack methodology. A hackers single computer doesn’t have enough processing power or throughput capacity to power their way into a big company database by themselves so they actively search for unprotected computers.
I have a little key fob sized doo-dad that can scan for hidden and visible networks, shows how busy the different radio channels are, etc. The only thing that keeps wifi networks secure is the password. There’s lots of people who know how to piggyback on unsecured networks. Criminals like them because if illegal activity is detected the gendarmes will question the network owner.
The way the world is these days with scammers and thieves everywhere, running shields-down is risky. Might be fine but also might not.
Many misconceptions there. The wifi ssid and password only allow connections over the wifi radio. Nobody in the greater internet needs the ssid or password to communicate or attack your network if not using the wifi radio.
Instead, what governs people being attack the network/router from afar are other settings and what services are exposed to the greater internet over the WAN port of the router. One of the most basic mistakes is to allow router configuration on the WAN side.
The thing that’s used in WAN communications are IP addresses and name services that turn names into proper IP addresses. Nothing on the WAN side needs or uses the wifi SSID or password. Very different domains used for very different things even though it all comes down to passing data packets.
True. There’s always been criminals. These days we just give them better tools to rob and fleece people from the comfort of their living room chairs or basement bedrooms.
Thats why I try and preface any comment with a disclaimer that I might be wrong. That SSID & Password mixup is something that I do regularly. You have something that before you write or type you know you have a better than even chance of getting it wrong? Spelling gets me. In the case of the ssid and password I know which text entry goes in which field but when I write about it I get it backwards quite often.
Most of my various rasperry Pi’s, PC, Laptop I have hardwired with ethernet cable to a switch. Wish my P1S had an ethernet port in addition to the wifi because I’d connect it that way
