How do I fix this is Studio? Print quality question

Here is a photo of my sliced print. Notice the transition from blue to white. The model is painted BEAUTIFULY. There are no jagged lines or errors. Straight painted lines but the slicer turns them into a jagged mess.

Is there a setting to improve this?

I too am interested in this. Orca gives similar results with models as BS so I think it’s more a geometry thing? I dunno for sure.

Try toggling between arachne and classic to see if the solver does any better, but that has its own +/-’s.

Actually arachne makes it worse. I’d love to figure out how to improve this.

Is it possible that this is just a visualization artefact? Maybe in the preview disable the seam? Or have you already seen those lines translate into the print?
If not, I would do a minimalistic test object (small cube with painting), that shows the same jagged lines in the preview and actually print it to check that.

Comes out in the print too. This eyeball’s geometry is just a sphere with another slightly smaller sphere poking slightly out of it.

Eh, at 0.08 you dont notice. Im zoomed way the F in here. it is present though.

I just assumed I was missing a setting or something. I had no idea everyone is having this, yet no one talks about it…

I’d love a cleaner painting solution also. I’m not sure there are any setting which eliminate the jaggy/mixing issue entirely. This seems like something inherently with the painting/segmentation algorithms.

This happens even with perfectly vertically divided faces, on a small scale. These shots are from a project I’m working on now. The white/brown separations are from CAD (Fusion) and follow the face lines exactly. The generated mesh has straight lines of course. The painting is done by the slicer during import. The “prepare” view in Studio shows perfect lines. I’ve tried adjusting every (I think) even remotely related property. But I still get these random jaggies which I can’t get rid of.



And that’s the best I could get, with only a few spots like this overall… it was originally worse. And no, they’re not very obvious in the actual print, but not invisible either.

I realize that with organic-shaped models this is going to be worse/different, but FWIW, for me two things helped, or at lest changed the behavior somewhat:

  1. Rotating the model around on the plate. No particular logic to it… mostly just shifts where the jaggies end up, but in some orientations they could be reduced overall.
  2. Splitting the model into separate bodies in CAD, along those long vertical face lines, then exporting as one OBJ/3MF and keeping the bodies as parts of one object in the slicer (but the white is still painted onto the surfaces, the parts are not assigned filaments directly).

I suspect there’s some numerical rounding issue going on, just based on how it changes by rotation and how regular the steps/offsets are. At least as part of it. Interestingly, the more complex curves (around the hexagonal holes) come out looking perfect every time.

Another thing I’d love to see is control over painting depth on vertical walls. Painting can really make a mess of the insides. If you enable wireframe view while in the paint tool (Alt + Shift + Enter) and paint a wall, you can kinda see the “havoc” it causes with the model, even before slicing. I have to wonder if this would also improve the surface, because the slicer wouldn’t necessarily have to calculate a solution that reaches all the way to the center of the model/wall. But another guess on my part.

Also exploring external painting solutions.
