Many models in MW have either text I do not want or in multi color which I do not need. When I select the object(s) and apply filament change the text color persists despite what I set. In Objects tap , there is no text stl (See pic). All objects are seems to be changed to grey color i had set.
The model here in example is this one, just for you to check but issue is not specific to this model. Almost all model I come across have this issue. Skadis Hooks Clearance Tester by AU3D - MakerWorld
I do not want to waste filament and time for a test file like this. Also sometimes I need to change the text in the model but they are not selectable or editable.
The text is modeled in, so there isn’t an easy way to adjust what the text is, or remove it for that matter. You’d have to take it into a 3d authoring application, like Blender, to adjust that aspect.
This wont be true of all models, but how each designers handles it may be different. Generally speaking though, I wouldn’t bank on text being easily adjustable, unless the designer built it to be so.
the color changing is being handled through a layer color change, on that particular object. If you’re on the preview tab, you can select it and remove it. It’ll show on the right side of the window with the slider thing to preview the layers.
Thanks for the reply. I partially succeeded the way you described. Probably my skill issue. I ended up painted the whole models with the largest sphere brush.
I do not know Blender. As a free user, Fusion makes things even worse when it converts STL.
I find forcing an other language or wrong labelling, multicolor printing etc a bit inconsiderate of modelers. My family can not speak English, I usually search MW for their request or some test pieces like the example.
First i needed to resync AMS. The deleted all but first. BS did not let me delete that. It was orange PETG but I want to print in grey HS PLA in A4. I changed the filament to HS PLA but could not dare to change the color. I do not remember which tone of grey I set it in AMS. When I sliced, it sliced in single color. I send it to print to check. In print dialog it let me choose A4. As it has already past midnight and print is estimated to last 2h.35m, i can try it tomorrow morning.
As this a test piece, I need to see the numbers and it may also alter the result. For totally changing the text in other models, it looks like this is the only way I can do it.
I wouldn’t say it’s inconsiderate. There just isn’t an easy way to deal with things like that without jumping through other hoops. It depends on the tools used and approach of the designer.
I’ve looked into customizable text so people can customize certain models I’d make, but I didn’t find any super easy way to deal with it. Adding text in Bambu studio isn’t ideal for a few reasons. I could learn to use something like, uhh, what’s it called? open scad? But then I’d have to learn a new application and that’s just a rabbit hole I don’t have time/money for. I want to use the tools I know, and not have to learn a whole new application.
I don’t think Fusion is suitable for editing something like that, unless you had a source step file or what have you. I regonize that if you’re not familiar with Blender, or authoring applications like that, it may not be a very useful suggestion/thought. Personally though I’d use something like Blender, or Max/Maya, and clean up the geo by hand.
Jon already pointed out an easier on the fly approach though, which I think he’s right on. I imagine for most situations you could do something as such in Bambu Studio, to get what you want.
Let me get this one out of the way first. I am not native English speaker. I did not use “inconsiderate” as an insult.
I do not expect models to be customizable. Using Open CAD to design will take ages. I also except if they add their names or logo and make it ineditable.
Just the following model for example. Many people asked for CAD files just to be able edit the text. It is not hard to save a copy of the blank object before you add your text and offer it as an option. I had to redesign the blank inserts from sketch. It was not a big deal. Simple rectangles with filleted sides. But some models will take hours to redesign. The purpose of using model repositories is; either your are new and you can not do it yourself (in this case you can not modify either) or save time designing and test printing a small gimmick like this.
Also making those blanks will increase the potential downloads of your model. People will not skip it because they do not want that text.
But you expect the designer that he will give you his workfiles or design the model the way YOU want it - or you just give his profile only 3 stars.
If I make something >for myself< - and think that someone else might be able to use it, then I make it available online. You don’t always have customisability in mind. If you don’t like it the way it is, why the expectation?
Then why would they care for ratings. Half of the modelers beg for boosts and ratings. Will it be fair to give them boost and 5 star, while there are modelers who uploaded 20 different variations of 10+ plates of their model and spent maybe months worth of work and their model prints flawlessly. The rating system works a bit strange here. Similar to giving the same trophy to everyone just because they participated. No 1st , 2nd or 3rd place, just participation.
I learnt recently that the ratings are for profiles but not the models. As soon as you change the printer/nozzle/filament based on what you have it is no more the same profile.
And for the members who care for ratings my following comment makes much more sense.
The OP was not about dis-ing modelers who did not design their models for my needs but rather how I could modify these kind of models according to my needs. I had to give those examples to demonstrate what I wanted to achieve.
The people that do this don’t care about you, they care about points, likes, money, gift cards. The people that often beg for boost, don’t have the best models and what they churn out is an attempt to cash grab. Their lack of inclusion of customization is a reflection of that.
That’s a broad statement and I know it doesn’t reflect everyone. We all benefit from boost and all that stuff, as designers, so I can’t deny that I want boost and stuff too. However, we can still conduct ourselves professionally while pursuing our goals and needs in life.
The reality is there’s an even broader range of reasons why customization might not happen on a given model, and they’re all valid reasons.
Things are changing. Makerworld is a very consumer focused model repository. It’s not just tinkerers or fellow designers anymore. There’s a lot of people that don’t have those skill sets, but still want to enjoy 3d printing. they don’t need to be tinkerers or designers though; there’s room for everyone.
There’s a lot more fully fleshed out products. Things that are on the level of what you see on the store shelf. Not just small gimmicks, as you put it (I wouldn’t all that a gimmick either though, because a dishwasher magnet like that is a useful product I’ve purchased before 3d printing was even so big). I’ve created some of those projects, with the focus towards being on the same level as if you want into the store and purchased a likewise product, or hopefully in some cases, even better.
I guess that does lend itself some into the ideals of being able to customize, but there’s still a lot of if ands or butts associated with that.
I understand. And I’m not trying to cut you off. You got me thinking on the topic and wanted to share some thoughts too.
I have stayed out of this for fear of stirring things up.
But, I have to take exception with people demanding designers solve every possible problem.
We are not a single language world, that is not the fault of the designer.
Not supporting all languages is not the fault of the designer.
Not providing customisable versions is not the fault of the designer.
Not providing blank versions so others can manipulate the model is nit the fault of the designer.
English speakers can’t get versions of Chinese things in English unless there is a design choice involved.
Ratings are entirely unrelated to model designs, they are only about the success of the model being printed, nothing more. It concerns me how many people rate models and not the ability of it to be printed. The information about WHAT is being rated is there during the rating process.
Why designers like ratings is they confirm their belief the model prints and they are financially rewarded for their efforts. Are you suggesting either of these are wrong? Should the designer not care and should they not be rewarded?
You clearly have no idea what you are rating or why, I strongly recommend you read the rating rules before ever giving another one as you are clearly doing it wrong right now.
Making blanks increases the likelihood of people stealing them, making them their own and selling them. Sometimes it is about protecting your IP.
English native speaker or not, saying designers are inconsiderate means you believe they didn’t consider you and your needs.
This implies designers thought let’s exclude this bloke or let’s not include other languages.
Sometimes someone is just designing something and wants to share it.
What you should have done.
Rather than rant on the forum (ranting in general is fine) that designers aren’t doing enough for you and demanding all designers do your bidding and change everything they do for your needs you could have simply…
Direct messaged the designer and kindly asked them if they would make a language specific version for you and you provide the translations.
I wouldn’t be opposed to getting that request, I have tweaked models in the past because people asked nicely. I don’t guarantee doing it, there are many good reasons not to, but, you may well have found a positive response.
Instead, intentionally or otherwise you have insulted people with your demands for special treatment based on your belief designers are lazy and don’t want to solve issues they never even considered or should have to consider.
@MalcTheOracle
I think it is one of your bad days and you are trying to vent of your anger through me.
Just look at the line under the part you paraphrased.
No this not “protecting your IP”. As you are frequent of the treads about ratings and MW, you know this very well. Once you put anything on internet without getting an official patent beforehand, nothing will protect your IP. Anyone concerned with IP should not share anything. Sometimes including photos.
By the way did you received OK from Marvel and DC to put their IP protected logos on to your fidgets and get your free spools with the boost you get with them? or are you just stealing and reselling their material? Just joking.
I also mentioned that i am OK with modelers putting names and Logos. So I respect their effort of claiming the rights.
Read all my post here. I was not ranting. I was just asking for a suggestion for ways to change text an or their color.
For the second model I indeed asked for help from the designer. I did not received any reply. MW do not let DM and some MW user do not check BL Forums. I contacted a few designer for CAD files and they happily did so. You do not know me but you feel happy to prejudge me.
I did not call any one lazy. I was even apologetic for the two models I had to post as an example. And i did not asked for or expected any special treatment. I did not ask anyone neither here nor any other platforms to create a customized version for me. You are again prejudgemental here.
Most of the parts you picked up are response to some other posts. None were spontaneous. and actually they are correct as well.
Why should i bother him with this. I know many people happy to print in multi color and he mentioned in the information section that it can be printed in single color as well. It is not his problem that i do not know how to do it in BS. So I came here to learn.
And you just jumped in to topic to do that.
Also i think you missed this one too. You did not commented on that.
Whether you understood it or not, each of the things I highlighted came across as rude, demeaning, dismissive, disrespectful and demanding.
Help rarely gets offered when you start with that position.
I have taken other people’s 3mf (they created) and fixed them, I have reviewed their files to determine settings that will work, I have printed models to explain where someone went wrong. I did this all freely, because they asked, sometimes nicely.
You came across as rude and demanding.
You didn’t specifically ask for my help of course, but, the help of someone and the way you went about it seemed to rub people the wrong way, nit just me.
You might wish to think about that.
I won’t hold it against you, I just suggest you take a different approach next time.
