How to print an opaque sheet?

Just got a new Bambu mini, looking to print an opaque (lightproof) 3’‘x3’’ sheet with a thickness around 0.5 or 0.6mm. I thought this would be straightforward but I’m struggling figuring out what the right approach is. I can easily see the light shining through the sheet in the photo. The print is also turning out inconsistent with some places less extruded than others.

I’m using eSun PLA filament and the 0.4 nozzle. I’ve printed using the 0.08mm preset in Bambu studio/Orca slice and tried adjusting some of the settings:

  • I’ve increased the sparse infill density to 100%. I’ve also tried to print using Orca slicer and increased (Top/bottom solid infill/wall overlap) to 100%.
  • I’ve tried increasing the flow rate (it’s default at 0.98).
  • I’ve tried increasing the layer count and using different patterns.

I’m currently printing using rectilinear pattern, 0.08mm layer height and 2mm first layer. Not sure if what I want is feasible or if the only solution is to increase the thickness of the sheet.

Make sure your infill is set to aligned Rectilinear and slow it down.

I think you need to calibrate your flow - there should not be gaps between lines. I like the two-pass calibrations in OrcaSlicer.

This is a single 0.20mm layer (0.3 at the edges), held in front of a LED desk lamp.

Infill settings should not matter, there should not be any infill. A total of only three 0.20 mm top & bottom layers will be 0.6 mm thick.

You should be able to print a completely solid sheet, but maybe not a completely opaque sheet. The opacity will depend on the filament.

I gave it a go and this helped a lot. Thanks for the suggestion! I think what’s left is to figure out which filament to use because the black PLA+ I’m using from eSun doesn’t seem to be entirely opaque so I’m still seeing faint light coming through and I can’t up the thickness to compensate because I need it to be around 0.6mm.
