Hi, I’m printing some spikey hair and on the top must spike the very tip ends up being quite blobby at the top. Other similar spikes lower down the print look fine however. The only reason I can think this might be is because the print head skips past them to another part of the print rather than printing continuously in the same spot over and over again.
Would anyone know why this might be and if I can reduce it somehow?

Not to sound like a broken record….
- Make sure you filament is dry. These types of features will suffer from moisture before other areas show any signs.
- You might try lowering the temperature a little, slow down the print speed, and crank-up the cooling fans.
This is due to lack of cooling at the top since the layer time is extremely short. The other points are not as bad because the total layer time is longer as it’s still printing other stuff on that layer and not just the point whereas the top is just the point.

This is what the minimum layer time settings in the filament profile are for. Plastic on layer N-1 has not cooled off enough before the printer starts on layer N, so it’s basically extruding on Jell-O, with results being as you have experienced.
When the speed is slowed to keep the minimum layer time, it can trigger the law of unintended consequences.
Instead of allowing more time for cooling, the nozzle stays on the tiny part of the model for longer, injecting even more heat into the part.
To counter this, the nozzle needs to be forced out of contact by either of the three
- enforcing a prime tower (take a smooth timelapse)
- print two (or more) models at the same time with a decent separation
- build a primitive cube/tube in parallel, also with a decent separation
The “layer time” preview can be useful. It needs to show slightly higher layer times than the number given in filament cooling, max fan time.
