Even my VPN did not stand a chance against it(Good job Bambu Lab, you’ve invented the strongest anti-VPN in the world ) I had NO idea what was going on, and I was going mad that I could not read and send posts, which was annoying. So I decided to ask their support, and this is what I got:
Why would this happen? I could not see at that time. Anyway, I asked them when they would unban me, and their reply was that they did not have a specific time for unbanning Chinese user access. Anyway, today, when I randomly typed forum.bambulab.com, it suddenly loaded, like nothing had happened
I tried it both with VPN and direct connection. All worked!
Well, I’m posting this to make sure exactly why Bambu did this. Nothing huge, since I’m already online and happy, but just curious: What regulations were they struggling with?
Chinese ones, perhaps? Don’t know of any other countries regulations that would restrict (or ban) Chinese-based IPs to access a small time, insignificant (international) users’ forum.
Where is the forum hosted? Was the ban from China or against it (I.O.W. it may not have been China/Bambu doing the ban)?
In the US sometimes an entire block of addresses from one provider will be blocked by certain “security companies” (i.e. Cloudflare, this has happened to me several times) because of one bad actor or infected devices had remote DDOS triggered. (edit: these buisness do have a pretty good idea of IPs coming from VPN’s, some VPN companies have to keep changing end-point IP to counter act this).
It was blocked by China because someone in country had made “disruptive” remarks/comments in one of the forums.
If you understand the basis of GFW, this is a normal practice. Similar to battleNet, as well as other game server, there is always a dedicate, isolated server for Mainland China (MC) users. For example, BattleNet(dot)com(dot)cn used to contracted to NetEase, isolated with all other BN servers. Allowing MC users to communicate with non-MC users requires heavy moderation, take RedNote for example, and the resource required is huge.
At this stage I would guess:
BBL Forum is working on the back end to implement the MOD system, blocking as a temp solution.
MC users have alternative source (RedNote, TieBa, etc), this forum is replaceable for them, BBL simply exclude them and make this site non-MC only.
