I doubt it can be modified to work. Modular connectors are pretty precision things.
Best to just buy the correct cable.
Don’t try to McGyver the 6-pin to fit the 4-pin socket. You don’t want to do anything that might annoy the connector on the printer itself. Ask me how I know.

You need both. The six pin daisy chains AMS to AMS and last AMS to hub or buffer. 4 pin is between buffer/hub and printer.

You can make the bus cable yourself if you need extra length for the bus cable to the AMS. The connector is Micro-fit 3.0
As it suggested, 6pin cable has two cores unused. 6pin cable and 4pin cable are pretty much the same as carrying the same signal and all (RS485 protocol).
They fool-proofed it like that because they didn’t want people to hook up 2 buffers on the same RS485 network. Or they planed to have private talk from one AMS to another AMS, who knows.
Way beyond my electrical/electronics skill level but your comment about AMS’s talking to each other triggered a couple of thoughts about the cables.
I have 2 first gen AMS units, 1 AMS 2 Pro, and an AMS HT.

So the OG AMS units are both powered by and communicated using the 6 pin cable, where the AMS Pro has a 24V DC power supply. I do not recall if the 24V is just for drying or drying and power.
The AMS HT has 110V AC (US) power supply
Then you have the AMS Hub doing its thing with its own firmware. Having moved my AMS units around the and it does not matter where they are positioned in the string will always identify each one in the order in which they were originally connected to the printer. They then subsequently deviated from that scheme with the HT.
So I show AMS A, AMS B, AMS C, then the HT is also listed as A. Why they did not identify it as D remains a mystery to me. Somehow it gets the correct firmware to the correct device and I assume it is based on the serial number of each device
ams2 24V supply is just for drying.
I believe you can re-assign the AMS letter designations, but as far as I’ve seen my HT only is ever designated as HT. I only have 1 on that printer, I don’t know if a second HT would get a different designation.

Topology of RS485
Each slave has a distinctive address as in it’s local RS485 network. But the buffer / hub has only one fixed address. If 2 buffers or hubs on the same network, conflict happens.
The slave or master can broadcast a message over the network, while others listen. A message contains target address so that the slave would act or process the message if it has correct address attach to the message.
Think about walkie-talkie, you can broadcast “Alpha do you copy”, everybody on the same channel hears it but only Alpha would reply to that.
I think BBL considers it as a motorized drybox, not really as multi-spool switcher box as the acronym AMS suggests. So they put AMS HT in different category maybe?
