I propose a new way to do contests

Seems to be a lot of 1 entry and most likes etc, etc.

So if I have a great model and only 3-5 followers but it’s better than yours and you have 100, who will get the most likes?

And if you say me you’re deluding yourself. At that exact point quality doesn’t matter. When you take likes out and downloads out of it it becomes subjective to someones whims. Neither way is perfect or really any good.

I’d simply remove the rewards, or lower them considerably. Then you’ll see who designs for fun and is serious, and see those that throw ■■■■ at a wall to see if it sticks. Those with a huge follower base have a huge advantage. They also seem to be the loudest.

It’s a maker site. Shouldn’t neeed $300 to get you motivated. If you only do it for money then I’d rather not even see your models unless you have a patreon.

My opinion. I respect yours, respect mine.

Why unless the patreon?

For sure they have more visibility but having more DL or likes doesn’t necessarily means you will win a prize.
But entering a contest can definitely be a strategy to boost your stats and reach > rewards points.
To a point, that just being in the contest will make your model even more popular and you can potentially earn more from the reward than from the contest prize.

I feel like a broken record, but it’s probably my fault that I didn’t explain my proposal well enough.

For my proposal anyway, the amount of likes don’t matter, other than the small amount to place you in the pool of judged entries. So person A has a lot of followers and get 10,000 likes, and person B has only a few followers and only gets 20 likes, but both were in the first 100 entries to get those likes, they will be judged equally.

@billdjohnson I respect you’re opinion but I was lazy and didn’t go back and quote the actual lines I was responding to, which wasn’t to any comment you made. I can be like that some(all)times.

I feel your solution will simply get abused too. I may be wrong, and would happily admit so. Personally I think the rewards should be lowered. That would cut some people out right away.

Anywhere is fine. Patreon came to mind. Cults, Thangs, places where the designer can put a model they want money for. I guess my point is sell them where they can be sold and make money that way. Since the awards are so high this is why they do it. I think the awards should be lowered considerably

I agree. It will increase your chance.

A happy(?) side effect for me. I’m niche and learning. I entered simply to get seen a little, and I like getting positive reviews. I may be just as bad.

You actually explained yourself quite well. I appreciate the time and energy you put into your idea. As for my post, they were my thoughts on the entire conversation up until that point and not just your idea.

I believe that a bit more transparency in competition decisions would benefit many participants. A good example is the Phone 1 contest, where a brief explanation was provided for the winners, explaining why the model won. Especially with the third-place entries, it was clear why those models were among the winners. However, I don’t share Mr. Unnecessary Inventions’ opinion that this model is useful ! I would never use my smartphone as a tool for hitting. Therefore, the category should have been called ‘useless’ rather than ‘unexpected.’

I uploaded a model that had many useful functions and thought it would fit the category. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and the decision was, in the truest sense of the word, a slap in the face for me. To me, the model represents exactly that: a slap in the face for someone who created something unexpectedly useful.

Anyway, I’ve learned from this experience and will only submit models to competitions that I personally have a strong interest in or actually want or need for myself. Creating something specifically for a competition that I don’t need in the end is something I’ll avoid in the future, as I don’t want to produce unnecessary ‘junk.’ Now I have a Phone 1 case without owning the Phone 1! I even built a pedestal for my ‘loser’ so I can display it in my cabinet – as a reminder.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with how the competitions are run. However, the description of the expectations has disappointed me on several occasions.

For example, in the Magic Contest, it wasn’t clear to me that only Harry Potter-related entries were allowed. I interpreted the description to mean that any entry related to wizards, magic, and cosplay would be welcome.

There are already Judge’s comment underneath each winning model in every contest, you know.

And IMHO, this particular contest is not a good example ^^ It is not representative of the majority of the contests on MW. It was in partnership with Nothing Phone, with 3 external judges well known in the 3D community, one for each winning categories (with the same prize).
Of course, what those influencers will say will be more impactful than any other anonymous judge’s comments. But we can’t expect to have judges from that calibre in any contest either, that sound unreasonable/undoable.

I mean this

I’m referring to the description under the image. I’ve only noticed this in the Phone 1 Contest; in other contests, I don’t see such a description from the jury. I find it very helpful to read why the jury chose a particular model.

I just reviewed several contests and found that some have such descriptions while others do not. I mentioned the Phone 1 Contest only as an example because that’s where I last noticed it.

Indeed the latest contests don’t have comments. I guess it take some time for them to write a little something about each winning model. But I find them kind of uninteresting anyways. They looks more like marketing material than judge’s comment. ^^

I came up to the same conclusion ^^ I also have a useless cmf phone1 case and no phone XD. Other than that is the waste of time, the contests time frame are preventing me to create more meaningful design to me.
So yup, I’ll only participate to some that really really speaks to me.

After. Every. Single. Contest.

Christ on a pogo stick, need to drop that $300 ■■■■ so people will stop ******** over who won, who didn’t win etc.

Should be fun. Just fun. Every. Single. Contest.

Indeed. And that’s why in contests I only do stuff I actually use (or the contest gives me idea for it and it turns out to be good idea)… Which is why I think it should be mandatory to auto-reject from contests any models which do not have real photos: if you’re not willing to print it for yourself, why even bother putting it into contest?

As for “boo hoo why thing A won but not thing B?” That’s the reality of judged contests. As long as all entries and specifically the A & B do meet the eligibility criteria it’s up to judges, not participants and neither public to choose the winner.

Maybe this would be a good case for full on participation trophies.

Eh, ignore me. I’m on a rampage today and really have no business posting.
