I saw a monster printer and loved it

Am looking for a better paid job at the moment and I had a job interview in a place that used a home build monster printer.
Wasn’t allowed to take pics, which I found a real shame :frowning:

They needed a big enough printer years ago to create custom dashboard for right hand drive vehicle conversions.
So the most logical thing was to just build one from scratch.
How would you start to build a printer with a build volume of roughly 2m x 1m by 2m? XYZ that is…
The outer frame was created using 100mm steel I-beams !
No flimsy rails or such, just what you would for a good milling machine, including high speed servo motors.
Surprisingly it runs on a cheap ESP32 connected to home made interface that controls the servo motors.
Just insane overkill on the mechanical side of things.
Using their homebrew Marlin version that beast reaches print speeds of up to 1500mm/sec they claimed and it looked to be a match.
Using 3mm filament and a a 2mm !!! nozzle for the first run.
Second run is done with finer nozzles to get the right surface finish.
Seeing that thing lay down massive amounts of plastic was just nice.
Too bad they are looking for someone doing machine maintenance but who knows, if I get the job there might be ways to turn into an operator for that beast…

Made me wonder if there is still people out there building their own 3D printers from scratch or if these days everyone just goes for ready to use options…

the guy that does the 3d scanning and stuff for LucasArts (if it is still named that) build pretty much all his own kit.

Is it LucasArts or ILM (Industrial Light and Magic ?
I saw some stuff online about Adam Savage making puppets and animatronics.
Haven’t seen anything about the scanning and printing stuff in those Studios though.
If you ever come across a link with some old or new footage I wouldn’t mind taking a look.

I sooo forgot about Openbuilds…
Shame on me considering I used them a long time ago to build a little router for my fake Dremel…

I think he worked with both. also showed up in |“the tech behind” show off and on, his first gig I believe was doing stuff for Manic on the Matrix. I will ask him questions, I generally get what I want by bribing with Bbq. Many generations of southern men survived the dreaded wife aggro with this technique. I am not a cali native, so I am not “in the in crowd” just a Boarding school kid that met cool people who were in the in…

I also know he was the one that did the nude modeling of Angelina Jolie, evidently it was him, a full size laser scanning rig and a dozen *Very Attentive cad guys for a week… My only cool Silicon Vakllkery story involves lighting a million dollar server doing a billion dollar job gloriously on fire…
