So this is a subject I am very interested in. I truly believe that IP laws will definitely need to be updated because of 3d printing, just like how the music industry had to go to a pay for streaming services instead of just selling albums because mp3s allowed people to just download any song they want without paying. I believe something along the lines of subscription services might be something that ip rights for products lean towards in the future. Who knows, but 3d printing will definitely cause IP laws to be updated. That being said, as an artist I completely agree that someone shouldnât be stealing your model and posting it as their own, I want this to be clear so that you donât misunderstand what I am saying. That being said, if someone is making a model of say a Marvel character and profiting off it in any way, and not paying the original IP owner how is that different than someone stealing someones model. I get that the person created an original model, but that person didnât create the art in the first place, itâs someone elseâs art that the person is copying. Yes fan art is fan art, but technically it is still Copyright infringement. My kidâ's grandfather owns a book publishing business that makes books of Marvel, disney, nfl teams, musicians, etc. And their uncle is the founder and ceo of one of the biggest collectibles companies in the entire world. Their in house artists create the models for their collectibles the same anyone else makes a model to 3d print, and do you know the costs the company pays for the licensing rights to be able to do so? Insane amounts. Like I said before though, I completely agree that if it can be proven someone else is blatantly taking credit for a model you made, or anyone else made it should be removed, but what I donât understand is why everyone feels that this isnât ok, but those same people feel it is ok to create âfan artâ and financially gain from it, whether its selling the model, selling the prints, or just the points system here in makerworld. This isnât meant as an attack at you in any way, I just find this to be such an interesting topic of discussion, Iâve had many designs/works ive created plaguerized over the years and I hate it. Hell I actually founded photoshop.org when.I was a teenager back in the 90âs, one of the first websites ever teaching people to do graphic design and use photoshop ( later went on to sell the domain and the website it to adobe systems, with special terms that all content and revenue made off said content was still my own ) and years later after the site was no longer in existance, I found out that a college professor actually download my entire website, made it into a PDF and had been giving it to his students as part of his class curriculum for years, which I was actually flattered about, until I asked him for nothing more than to put my name on it and give me credit for designing it. Not only did he refuse to give me credit, he claimed to make it himelf. I found it super hilarious that he tried to claim he made it because I was a vain teenager when I made it, so most tutorials that involved a photo used a photo of myself for the lessons, and any âText Artâ Tutorials used my name âNateâ to teach the tutorial. Once i brought that part up, he couldnât deny he stole it, so He blocked my email, blocked me on facebook, and on twitter. I was so pissed off because i asked fro nothing more than recognition for my work that I actually contacted the college he worked at and demanded that either I be given named recognition or I was going to sue ( I never was planning on suing but I was super uset that someone was taking credit for years worth of my work and art ). So the university said he had to give me recognition in order to keep using my material. He was such an arrogant prick he removed the entire thing from his curriculum rather than give me credit and admit he didnât make it himself. All that being said, My personal view is like I said from the beginning that we are coming into a whole new era where anyone at home is starting to be able to, and soon will be as common household item as 2d printers are today that IP and copyright laws and how revenue is generated from said IP will have to change from the current system. Hell we already have counties such as china that could care less about IP rights. And like Mark Twain once said âThere is no such thing as an original ideaâ
I agree to pull of the model, but if bbl doesnât know its origins or it has a bunch of 5 stars, theyâll likely let the copycat stay alive. You never know what the copycats say for themselves. I wish bbl could somehow scan the internet to make sure the model wasnt copied, but when that happens, the scammers are probably pros by then.
