Inconsistent gaps and Edge Refinement

I’m really new to 3D printing and while I’ve read a fair number of troubleshooting guides and watched a few videos, I have not been able to determine what could be causing the issue I’m having or even how to begin troubleshooting on my P1S.

So there are really a few issues I’m hoping to get help with.

In the first image, you can see the gunk in the horizontal rows. When printed, there was what appeared to be some sort of supporting material in between the raised elements. Anyhow cleaning it up is both a challenge and a chore because I don’t see it getting better. Assuming it was a support structure, is the best way to ensure they don’t get used next time to use the support paint tool’s “no support” brush?

In the second image, a second piece of the print shows how clean those horizontal lines can be (printed at the same time and same settings). However, as you can see at the center and then to the left, the edges of the outcropped blocks loose their sharpness. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. The third photo shows what’s happening on the backside of the second image.

For the third image above, I am at a loss as to why that quality is so poor. Any suggestions for how to fix it would be appreciated.

Finally, the domes. The next picture is of the top and bottom of the dome. I’ve done some reading about changing infill pattern, infill density, increasing the number of top layers, and several other adjustments that I can make. I did try the ironing function on another print (with flat sides - a basic large box) and that didn’t have the results I imagined, so I’m not sure this is a better use case.

But I’m hoping there may be a few other key settings that could create much smoother curves FWIW, I did try to sand some ridges off the domes but that didn’t make anything better (I think it added to the visibility of the issue).

I have a P1S and AMS. The model was printed using the .08mm extra fine preset. I use Bambu Studio for my slicer. I’m printing using Bambu PLA basic gray. PLA humidity was reading 24% (I’m drying it right now to ensure moisture is not the issue). The P1S is on Firmware 01.09.01.00.

Have you tried the flow calibration? And bed leveling? And orienting it differently? Share the 3mf so we can help you more!

I have not done flow calibration. I’ll do that now.

I have Studio set to auto level for every print.

FWIW, we don’t care about the grinding functionality or the storage area at the top. My neighbor is using it as a prop on a birthday cake and found this model she liked without understanding what it is for. I suggested gluing it together :smile: .

Here is an image of the calibration print. I don’t love any of them. Maybe .016

I’m going to see if there are any settings that aren’t standard and then print again. Will update.

I reset the setting under the home icon to the default and reprinted the calibration. Next photo is that print, the photo after that is side by side. First print is on the right.

I’m going to set the k value and then orient as Bullocks suggests in the post below this one.

This object’s exterior is made of nothing but spheres and short, extreme overhangs. FDM is going to struggle on whatever plane matches gravity here.

I would print this with the flat-cut of the hemi-sphere down on the plate, and go from there. Putting any rounded edge of a sphere on the plate always will come back to bite you.

Ok, reporting back. I did the flow calibration, slowed the printing speed down for walls, changed from .08mm to .12mm, used arachne wall generator, concentric surface pattern, painted the seam to the back surfaces, and rotated the orientation per Bullocks suggestion above.

The exterior surfaces are great (see images). The interior surfaces have a lot to be desired, but my guess is that to some extent it occurred due to my slim tree settings for support.

However, several of the grinding spikes that should be structural failed miserably. Since this is being used as a cake topper, it isn’t an issue for today, but it may come back to bite me in the future. The interior storage area for the ground materials is good (but it was a top surface during the print and didn’t need any supports).
