Aloha,
When I print items on my A1 that have floating initial/bottom layers that need support, I use the tree support in order to save filament and for some reason that initial/bottom layer keeps coming out all stringy instead of being smooth.
Can someone give some suggestions for what adjustments I need to make?

You could try using support filament.
Can you elaborate please? How do I do that?
Support for PETG/PLA is a special type of filament made by bambu lab to create seamless supports that are easy to take off structures. (note: this support can ONLY be used for PETG or PLA)
Another good filament for supports is PVA, it dissolves in water and can be used to support just about anything. The only downside is that its quite weak, using this in a heated chamber might ruin it
Go to the “By Material” tab on the left-hand side and click “Support”
Some tips I have when generating supports in the slicer, decrease the threshold angle to 25 degrees instead of 30, turn on “support critical regions only”, “remove small overhangs” and set the support type to “Tree slim”
If you are using PLA, you might want to use support for PLA which is cheaper
