Ironing Help

  • Printer: P1S
  • Filament: Sunlu PLA+ in Gray
  • Slicer: Orca, 0.2 layer height, 3 walls, 10% gyroid, ironing flow 10%, ironing speed 50mm/s, Ironing All Top Surfaces, Interface Shells turned on
  • Nozzle: 0.4
  • Bed Temp: 45C

I’ve ran several ironing tests, including this one and this one, to find the right flow and speed. The best looking and feeling one for me was the 10% flow and 50mm/s speed. So I then printed my model with those ironing settings and the top is bumpy and wavy. What is happening here? I can’t flip my model over bc I need a smooth surface in the logo as I’m trying to make a stamp and I need a smooth surface to to pour the silicone into. I printed a smaller disc before printing my model and it turned out great with the ironing settings.


I’ve since been experimenting with ironing flows and speeds but still can’t dial it in.

Try increasing the top layers. Bump it up to 4 or 5.

Lower the flow by 2 percent and see how that works. The bumps are happening because the nozzle is slowing down and putting down too much. See that it happens on the edges of both the test and the final part.

@CincinnatiDesigns That helped some, so I dropped it another 2 percent and am running it again.

Hope you can get a little more quality out of it. Ironing always seems to be a guess and check type of thing for me.

Ironing is hard to advise on because it is so filament, model, process, and machine-wear dependant

This model and others like it are very helpful. It still isn’t perfect because large ironed areas behave differently than small ones but i hope you get the idea.

Anytime I do ironing with pla or PETG, I use 32% flow and 80mm/s. That combo seems to work really well for me.

@CincinnatiDesigns Dropping the flow to 6% actually produced a worst result than 8%

As I said, it is not an exact art. Scale that piece down and make your own ironing test if you need to.
