Is it safe to print PETG-CF

is it safe to print indoors with P2S printer, does it require ventilation?

I have the p1s and I print PETG-CF no problem, so I assume the better version also can. Just make sure you don’t open the door. Try to keep the chamber at a the correct temperature, and make sure you have the right temp for build plate and nozzle

I have only heard that touching CF filament with your hands will cause tiny CF snippets sticking in your skin.
I never heard that those snippets will detach while printing and go into the air. I also don’t see why they should. So I think, there is no hazard while printing, only from handling CF prints.

I use ventilation for all my prints. I also have it in a smaller room so im just being cautious even if they say its a less toxic product.

The fibres that are actually dangerous are invisible. You cannot see them even with a light microscope. I do not think that printing with fibre-filled filaments can lead to a dangerous exposure. The situation could be different if someone decided to sand the printed part after printing.
I am quite sure that the guy in the video knows that he could actually give the all-clear. But of course, giving reassurance does not generate clicks. Saying that fibre filaments are dangerous is much better for attention :slight_smile:

For proper health - ALL printers should be vented externally regardless of the material. There are however, materials that are less of a concern like PLA & PETG as they have low emissions and are generally considered non toxic. all materials have some level of emissions & toxicity but these 2 are generally a low health risk.

I use X1C’s and do all my printing within my home office(roughly 400 sq ft closed room). I’ve been fine with PLA & PETG. When I print anything else it bothers me - IE: TPU, ABS, others I will get headaches, sinuses dry out, chest discomfort, and generally just don’t feel well.

If you can easily vent externally it is always a good idea. If I need a print in material other than PLA or PTEG I have a friend print it (who has external venting) or move one of my printers to the garage workbench.

To my knowledge it makes a huge difference if the CF is pan or pitch based where the pan based CF is significantly less “spikey” and therefore less dangerous. Unfortunately I can’t find the source anymore where they investigated this.

Besides - not sure why anyone would print PETG-CF or PLA-CF where there are other filaments get similar properties without CF.
I only ever use CF in PETG for ESD items. So besides Polymaker’s ESD PETG I never even considered buing PLA or PETG with CF.

You are probably right. PLA-CF really is a gimmick, because the only difference that CF would make (increase stiffness, reduce warping) is a non-issue for PLA. Leaves only the looks.

For PETG, it makes a bit more sense i think. If other properties of PETG are ok for you but you want more stiffness, PETG-CF could be a cost-efficient choice. I have one roll that was less than 25€. Admittedly I haven’t opened it yet for more than a year :joy:

For higher demands I occasionally use PC but that is really another story especially due to warping of bigger parts.

Which filaments do you have in mind?

Depends on what you want to achieve.
If it’s for stiffness you can simply use PLA Basic which has similar stiffness in X-Y direction and outperforms PETG-CF in Z direction.

My biggest issue with PLA for technical stuff is the horrible creeping under load. If you have something under tension like a clip, it will loose tension and deform within hours. PETG is much better in that regard.

I also have an unopened spool of PETG-CF that has been sitting on the shelf about over a year. I actually don’t know what would I print with this spool :joy:

I have printed a large 2 piece battery box for 72v.
The first one in PLA, the weight of the battery was too much for the material. Used same profile and threw in some PLA CF. The box is now capable of handling the 72v 16.5 lb battery.

I was in general very much disappointed by the Bambu PETG-CF, but not by safety considerations.
Despite the fact, that I was drying the filament 2 times, then after printing, it breakes much easier, than other material, even PLA. I could easily compare it, because the prototype was printed in PLA before. The only positive thing is the beauty because the layer lines are more or less hidden by the CF.

Another interesting fact emerging from the same source as the one you quoted: BiQu CF filament actually overcomes the safety and layer separation issues inherent to Bambu PLA CF and PETG CF by making the CF stay in the core of the filament, even after extruding it!

I have some Qidi ABS-GF25, which has the fibers in the core. The filament has a rough surface and handling it gives me itches. Corners in printed parts feel like they expose glass fibers too. So I basically never use it for walls but for sparse infill. This seems to help reduce warping very well.

History is replete with examples of “it hasn’t been shown to be dangerous/deadly. . . .” and those things being used with wild abandon, until it was discovered/admitted they were dangerous. That applies to things like lead, asbestos and a number of drugs pulled from the market.

Then there is the mercury and fluoride dental care thing. People with impressive and relative credentials are warning, but the propaganda pushing lobbies yet prevail.

The point is, they do not know what exposure to emissions from our printing operations do to us. It could be loading our systems down and concentrating in certain areas.

It’s only been in the last few years micoplastics became a known issue.

Exhausting or filtering the air, that is, erring on the side of caution, certainly, isn’t going to hurt anything.

The plastics used in filaments, as well as any fibers they may contain, are considered well researched from an occupational health and safety perspective.

However, when it comes to the use of filters, one should not develop a false sense of security. Especially with activated carbon, it would in fact be necessary to test each individual filament separately - that is, to analytically determine which type of activated carbon is suitable and what the realistic service life would be.

In some cases, it is even conceivable that activated carbon could cause initially harmless compounds to be spontaneously cracked into hazardous substances, or that such transformations could occur with a time delay and be released during subsequent printing processes.

The simplest and safest solution is therefore to place the printer in a separate room and ensure that this room is ventilated regularly.

Thats what i would like to do but have no spare rooms. So im only printing pla and petg for now.
