Is this Normal? Hotend jumping up and down and hitting print

I have prints that keep failing because the hotend hits the print and causes it to detach from the plate. Is it normal for the hotend to jump up and down while putting down a layer? Any thoughts on what my problem may be?

This is a test object, including testing of overhangs.

Edge curling. Did you dry the filament? Curling is usually one of my first indicators of moisture in the filament.

Once it is dry, you can address curling also by slowing down and lowering the layer height.
Adaptive layer height is particularly helpful here. Just make it fine enough to have a green layer height bar, red/orange indicates thicker layers. You can make local adjustments by left/right clicking in the layer height bar that pops up after applying adaptive layer heights.

But keep in mind that this is a test print. It should be designed to test the limits of the filament/printer/settings combination.
If the test does not fail at some point, it rather defeats the point of the print.
The failure location (here in terms of overhead angle) then shows how far you can drive the filament, printer, settings combination. You should then know the maximum angle of overhangs printable without supports.

Thanks for the comments. This was a test print. I showed the video because it showed the contact. But it’s happening on other prints too.

In this print, the nozzle must have made contact about 50% of the way through and broke the center section free from the plate. The first layers went down perfect.




This second copy looked fine, but it also had layers that were problematic - likely because the toolhead had been knocked out of adjustment and the layers started going down in a slightly different orientation.

Probably not a filament issue, check if the belt is damaged, and if not, could be a motherboard problem
