Got my A1 Mini in August and have printed various bits I have designed myself - functional and not too fancy. Saw the recent Bambu statues option so uploaded a photo of my Son and was impressed with the resulting file, so sent to print using Bambu PLA Basic.
Had a filament tangle part way through the first print (left) so there is a line over the face area where it resumed, but all the tree supports came off well. The top of the head shows layering, and under the chin it looks to have been poorly supported.
Changed the layer height for the second print - maximising throughout. Disaster. The tree supports outgrew the main print area and the whole lot was knocked off the plate.
Third print (right) changed the layer height for the very top of the head only, reducing the layer steps considerably. I think I had switched walls to arachne. Tree supports wouldn’t come clean off.
Today’s print in Elegoo PLA Silk Bronze printed reasonably nicely, but the tree support for under the chin was knocked off the plate leaving some string. On finishing, the other trees snapped off cleanly and easily but under the chin is a mess. Wall type definitely arachne
Any advice?
What do you have the top Z distance set to under support settings? The Pictures with the bad overhangs probably have a too high setting under this, reduce the distance to the printed part until the support gets hard to remove then back off a little.
If you have the AMS, another trick that I just learned about and works well is using PETG (only as the support interface) for PLA (or the other way around) that way you can turn the value in top Z distance down and it supports very well and do not stick to each other when removing.
0.2mm. Apart from changing the wall type, and adjusting the layer height at the top of the head (the images are all laying on their side) I left all the settings as provided by the Bambu statue app. I’d never used tree suports before, so don’t know if they can be changed effectively.
No AMS - I’m in the cheap seats.
They’re the cheapest they’ve ever been right now… I’m just saying … no peer pressure…
I plumped for the A1 mini on its own back in August as I wanted to dip my toe into 3D printing. I’m hooked!
This is the learning machine to really get an idea of what I want to do, what is possible to do, and I’ll push this as far as I can, then probably go with the P series with an AMS (or two). I think if I’d gone for the AMS lite at the time I bought the Mini I would harder to justify an upgrade for a longer while which would limit the filaments and print size. I also need to work out where to put a larger printer!
You COULD lean the statue slightly so the chin area won’t need as much support and is not hanging in free air.
Means wasting a bit of filament for the base but might give better results.
Thanks, I did wonder about that. How would I go about it? Is it as simple as moving it on the plate in Bambu Studio?
I also wondered if the tree support was the best for that area and could I create another support?
If I am changing the orientation, I could simply lie the model on it’s back and have standard support, or cut part of the back away flat
Indeed, you move and rotate the model in Studio to get the best possible orientation for the areas of detail in question.
Flat on the back might need a lot of support but would ensure a nice front.
Try to find a good balance between angle and required support amount, preferably as little support, except for the leaning base, as possible.
The type of support is not that important as long as it stays in place.
What is though is the support area and spacing.
A badly rounded and free hanging part as the chin area certainly benefits for a dense support pattern but then again, not having to use supports in this area gives better results.
I decided to have a go at answering my own questions last night and found it is very easy. This is queued for printing tomorrow.

Still not sure what support option is the better to go for.
