Jam led to terrible print quality

I’m hoping for some advice on print quality issues that started after dealing with an extruder jam on my Bambu Lab P1S with AMS 2 Pro.

My extruder was jammed here, so I cleaned it thoroughly and reassembled the toolhead. Since then, print quality has degraded a lot, even though I’m using the same slicer settings and filament (Generic PETG).

It looks like the extruder isn’t pushing out enough filament during printing. The nozzle seems to move faster than the filament is being extruded, causing under-extrusion—almost as if the filament can’t “keep up” with the print speed. Layers appear sparse and incomplete. Or the opposite, filament is not pushed at the right speed.

The purge filament looks different now. Before, it came out as small springs. Now it’s irregular and messy.

I’m quite sure I assembled it correctly. But I guess I might have caused this issue. I haven’t been able to find the answer anywhere else. Would appreciate your help.


Your nozzle is probably partially clogged.

Well, I’ve tried it and cleaned again. It’s not clogged now. Extruder looks clean and fine inside. The quality got better, but anyway it’s not like before anymore. I suppose I’ve printed 100 hours, not more. And already having these issues seems weird. Or is it common after 100 hours print?

Did you confirm that the nozzle is indeed flowing correctly as detailed in the wiki?

It is not perfectly straight now. I don’t know how to clean it even better. Did what the wiki says. Probably just should try again.

So, If I understand you correctly, you think the problem is 100% with the nozzle? If I change it, the quality will be better?

But I don’t get the point. Why does it get clogged? It’s plastic inside. The same filament is going out when heated. Why should it be clogged?

A couple “cold pulls” will normally clear partially clogged nozzles.

It is rare that a clog is that bad that a series of cold pulls will not do the job. You just have to do them correctly.

Cleaning filament is a good investment too for partial clogs like this.

Yes, but you would be wasting a nozzle. It is always good to keep a spare around that you can switch out when needed. Sometimes clearing a major clog it is actually easier to do it outside of the unit with a heat gun and some small allen keys.

Fact of life. Everything does not make sense. There are always little gremlins that will fight you.

Most clogs that I see come from carbon buildup. Filament will get stuck then after a few heating cycles it will carbonize so it gets hard and does not melt. There is also dust issues. A little bit of lint feeding into the machine will clog it up.

There is also heat creep but I have not seen many issues with that on modern machines.

I’ve done cold pulls 3 times. The result is unfortunately the same. No changes.
The flow is sometimes straight, sometimes not. It’s random.

So my last hope is changing the nozzle, before throwing this printer in the trash.

I replaced the hotend and the quality is back finally. But my print time was only 61 hours. Does it mean I have to replace it so often? I’m confused.

Sounds like an issue with that particular hotend. Is it from Bambu or third party? Depending on your printing circumstances a hardened Bambu hot end well last well over a thousand hours if not several thousand.

It’s a new Bambu lab printer, so the hotend was also Bambu lab.
