When in doubt, start from scratch. I’ve myself been agro beyond belief that so many people have blatantly stolen my work but because there was no shared CAD, there’s nothing I could do about it. I figured don’t fight em, join em. I make my own, I still credit the original though and also include links in the description and for some I ask downloaders not to give me boosts but to give them to the original ideator. BUT this practice that I thought was a noble one, has its risks, and punishments, e.g. if a model that for example, had changed from being remixable to exclusive at some point, we see a disclaimer saying that a remix was made before the license change - BUT this ‘locks’ the model in a prison FOREVER. You cannot fix a typo, you cannot update the model, you cannot add text to the description, you can’t upload new photos, you can’t change the title to avoid copyright issues, nope, you can’t do anything but leave it exactly how it is forever. or delete it. There are no other choices if you want to remain HONEST.
But if you want to delete the link to the remix and be DISHONEST, you risk two things: going on forever without a qualm making points without credit, OR risk MW citing you for remixing an unremixable exclusive model.
It is a catch 22, a kobyashi Maru!!!
I often download a model and then find that it desperately needs modification, or sometimes a complete make over, and I would like to post that it’s a remix to another model to give proper credit to the author that made the thing that might be just a great idea but really bad execution, but the site doesn’t allow it to post as a remix and so it just sits on my ssd in a folder and noone gets the benefit.
then you could make a system in which every point gathered by the remix goes directly to the original poster, in any case giving people more option is king.
i think this very situation is best sorted out via print profiles.
I agree that exclusive programs can harm remix culture. However, with more designers facing issues from having their models revoked from such programs, many might reconsider making their designs exclusive and instead opt for more remix-friendly licenses.
If you come across a design under the ‘standard license’ that doesn’t seem to be part of the exclusive program, try reaching out to the designer. They might have been removed from the program and could be open to changing the license.
For designers: If you plan to make your model exclusive, consider incorporating ‘attachment’ points. This allows others to create compatible parts and accessories without violating the standard license.
People already have the option to give the points to the original creator. Ask the people who have the most issues with skimmers posting “remixes” how many actually gave them the points.
There is no one solution that will please everyone, unfortunately. Respecting the rights of other people to control the fate of their own creations is the overarching consideration here.
You may not like that someone doesn’t allow remixes but it’s their right as the creator of their designs. You are always free to create your own, non-infringing widget or part, post it, and allow remixes.
There are long-standing international laws that govern these things. People don’t have to like it but people who create unique models are the rights holders and get to determine their own path. Those who want remixes for everyone are free to post their models with licenses that allow remixes - just as those who don’t want to allow remixes are free to use non-remixing licenses and get remixes taken down that infringe.
I have 50 models on a PC in my den, Ive posted only 2 on MW somewhat unsuccessfully lol for that very reason, also opening an online endeavor in 6 weeks and would prefer not to have models “stolen”
Do you allow remixes of your models and creations? I’m just curious because it would be interesting to know in the context of your statement.
Unfortunately, when I look at your profile, I can’t see any 3D models, remixes or print profiles, it’s completely empty? Of course, it’s possible that you’re uploading them under a different username?
I’m always curious to know who is pushing for this and whether they allow remixes of their own work and create original content. In other words, whether they want to contribute as well.
As you can see from my other comment, I am in favour of remixes. However, I also believe that each creator should be able to decide for themselves.
Take away the incentive to make remixes and you’ll solve the problem. People should only be remixing because they want to improve a model, or modify it for another similar purpose. The points screwed everything up.
Also…there should be an age limit on the app/site.
Amy derivation of a model that is exclusive or doesn’t allow remixing, simply upload as a print profile. Case Closed.
Redesigning all geometry 100% is no longer a remix even if it resembles the original, it is a new model, without remix credit, but with credit to the orginator optional and recommended in the description text.
Reading the standard digital license that must be applied to exclusive models and it doesn’t allow any change in the model.
So if you change it, you have to keep it to yourself. Uploading it as a print profile, or any other way, and you’re not the original creator is a license violation.
Ive been doing that, and some designers feature it right below their since they love the design. Ive also had some designers compain to makerworld and have it taken down. I also had makerworld take it down on their own stating “No remixed allowed under standard license”. So if you do that just dont put the word “remix” in the description.
https://makerworld.com/en/@Goldstick3D I’m not sure why the profile to this forum and to makerworld exist separate… I don’t have many models, due to the fact I had described before. And my point is not to force anything on top to anyone else, it’s rather to present the default license so that people would be encouraged to remix.
I come from Thingiverse, then Printables, then Thangs.com and now Makerworld… All these most popular sites remixing is the default, it’s the life and soul to the community, the thing that brought many people to the printing in the first place.
Great example is Lucky13 model. around 450 remixes in Printables.com and about half of that on Makerworld, sure it was brought to this platform later, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s convenient to find extras etc to the models…
Maybe “the profiles” should be redesigned somehow to allow people to use them as remixes of sorts…
I believe the thinking that, people start to steal when getting things according to law becomes too difficult.
