Laser surface smoothing example

Not something I’ll do myself but it’s an interesting result

Same here. I imagine you probably cant go all the way to the edge either. Or else the molten filament would spill.

this is pretty cool but that 1hr time is way to long to smooth out that little section. I wonder if it could add a textured finish

I experimented with my old diode laser when I got the more powerful one installed…

There is a lot of problems to consider…
Certain colours won’t work because the wavelength of the laser is no match for them.
Some filaments prefer to melt while others prefer to smoke.
And even while PLA prefers to melt some colours behave very different.
Yes, textures and patters are possible with ease but is it worth it ?

The fumes produced can range from acceptable over unpleasant to plain toxic, like when trying ABS or Nylon.
A bad surface is bad for laser smoothing, so ironing helps but also makes the laser treatment questionable.
A well calibrated filament resulting in a great top layer is good for effect engraving.
Rather than changing the smooth and shiny surface you smooth out the lines.
Either way it takes a lot of trying and tuning and you probably start from scratch with every colour you try.
And once I cleaned the old laser head and rails I decided it really is not worth using a laser on plastics not dedicated for laser use…
The H2D might help with a filter on the back but that won’t do much for the corrosive fumes lingering in the chamber…
Just saying…

I think its more time efficient to sand it and paint it, or just turn on ironing.
