Layer to layer adhesion

Ive been printing over a year now on my P1S and replaced a few nozzles etc everything has worked great. Over the last month or two, my layers wont seem to adhere to eachother. Ive tried calibration, drying the filament in a filament dryer, BRAND NEW filament. Nothing seems to work. All my prints have been coming out with weak layers that wont stick to eachother and very brittle etc. Here is an example. If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know. Im wondering if one of the updates caused this…

Weak layer adhesion is often because the filament isn’t hot enough.

Have you checked your nozzle thermal paste to see if it has dried out?

I also get lots of stringing too, would that also be caused by not being hot enough? (This print is PETG) i mostly use PLA but wanted to see if petg would make a difference

Stringing can be caused by too hot of filament or moisture in the filament. The latter could also be causing the layer adhesion issues.

How are you drying your filament?

Brand of filament are you using? Do other brands act similarly?

I tried another round of filament drying 8 hrs at 65°C a and the petg seems to still be stringing

Elegoo is what ive been using. Ive been using elegoo since i got this printer and had no issues until a month or two ago. Other brands ive tried since this issue started also has same issue. This PETG im testing with right now that is stringing is “Greentech”

PETG is notorious for showing water issues. Unfortunately not all filament dryers truly dry the filament well under all ambient conditions.

Not having issues for a while until you do is frequently a sign of moisture getting into the filament from high ambient humidity.

My money is on insufficient drying but YMMV.

I have tried a BRAND NEW roll of PLA filament fresh out of the plastic and its still giving me the same layer adhesion issues. I just bought a new complete hot end assembly that will arrive tomorrow. im hoping that solves the issue. :crossed_fingers:

That’s a common misconception - brand new filament can easily have too much water in it to print properly.

The bags they are “vacuum sealed” into are semi-permeable to water. That’s why the desiccant bag is in there - to scavenge water that does get in.

How much water is in there? Depends on time since packing and how it was stored until you opened it.

In my experience PETG HF has always needed drying and PLA has usually needed drying. I just dry it all instead of fooling around with wet filament.

Can totally get behind this, and it truly is depressing brands do this. The critical flaw most dryers have is, yeah sure they get the chamber hot, but where does that hot, humid(er) air go? Yeah into the chamber. There is no escape for that humid air and when it cools back down again the water eventually is back into the filament again. I had to do my research on this stupid “phenomenon” when I bought one. The market of these supposed “dryers” is really scammy and most of them look like a $5 product which is somehow $60 dollars for something that doesn’t work.

Now the defects I am seeing that @Primitive_Future has really looks like wet filament to me. I printed something a bit ago with PETG and it looked exactly like that. Of course take that with a grain of salt because there are so many factors that can cause this stuff.

Had a severe problem with strength a bit ago with chainmail (obviously a way different genre of possible problems) and it turned out I needed to turn the part cooling fan down (off in my case as each layer has plenty of time to cool) and the strength was completely fixed.

Don’t know how helpful all this was but I like typing about stuff I actually kind of know about.

This is the main reason I have an Eibos Easdry, it pushes the moisture out of the dryer. I do not find that many others do.

MakerWorld has a number of door props for various filament dryers that really help in the first part of the dry when humidity spikes. With the door propped open a little you get the room air to exchange with while water is coming off wholesale. It can speed up a dry significantly. But it also sets a lower limit on humidity in the box to an extent.

My process is different from most but I dry with the door propped open until the humidity in the box has peaked and is slowing in how fast it’s reducing. Others may want to take it until the humidity has basically stopped reducing. At any rate, the door prop trick surprised me on what they can do for dryers that don’t purge or otherwise actively remove water. It lets a lot of water out pretty quick.

I put in a brand new complete hotend and a BRAND NEW fresh opened roll of pla and im still having issues :tired_face: heeeeelp!!!

Did you check/reapply the thermal paste as suggested upthread?

I tried a brand new hot end that just came in the mail today. So its not that.
I feel like ive tried everything :sleepy_face: i cant run the self filament calibration because i dont have bambulab filament so it wont recognize the ones i do have. I have run a calibration on the machine though. Wondering if a factory reset will solve anything…

That would be my first suggestion, reset the printer to factory. If that doesn’t do the trick, you should remove the nozzle and the extruder and open it up to check the extruder, the gears may be dirty or full of filament.

I just tried the first firmware i had, and its still giving the same issue. It almost looks like the filament is coming out too fast? Would a dirty extruder cause that?
