Lithophane Questions and Recommendations

Hoping that someone out there is able to help and give some advice on the options available to create a Lithophane image.

The MakerLab has the “Make my Lithophane”, where you can create a Lithophane, and i gives you options of size, orientation etc, and provides a link to the shop to purchase the LED Backlight Board kit. But it doesn’t really say what is required for any given image.

For instance the 1:1 option for an image is given as 3 light panels 152 x 152, and the backlight kit gives the options of 96 x 144mm (2 PCS) or 192 x 144mm(4PCS), either option doesn’t allow for 152 in the image you want to create, so how is it worked out? Also, does this kit include some kind of box to put the 3D printed Lithophane in, or is do you have to get one separately.

As always any help or advice greatly appreciated.

I was looking at that tool and they’ve definitely made it a bit confusing with the different choices.

I don’t know the answer to the sizes but the frames are printed.

To add to @MZip comment: It has been (quite) a while since I did lithopanes. Only a single size was available at the time. But it also required printing a dedicated diffusor pane which enables a larger lithopane than the led board to work well.

OK thanks, so a lot more to it than I first thought. May just have to buy both sizes and see which is best

Chiming in because I do a fair amount of lithophanes and I do have models for it.

Basically Bambu sells 2 types of LED boards:

  • Bambu CMYK LED Backlight Board
    • Single board with a usb-c connector
    • 120x156 total frame size, for 140x104 lithophanes
    • Pick “Mono/Colorful Litho with Fixed Frame” on Makerlab
  • Lithophane LED Backlight Board Kit
    • Comes in packs of 2 or 4
    • Also called 3-Size frame, a modular system with up to 4 boards, and can be arranged in 2, 3, or 4, as shown in Makerlab
    • Pick “Mono/Colorful Litho with 3-Size Frame

MakerLab creates the lithophanes with the correct dimensions for the board chosen, and frames on makerworld that are made for these dimensions should fit without issues.

The LED boards sold by Bambu only include the boards, not any box or printed frame, that’s on you to print

In your example, the “Square” version uses 3 of the 4 boards of the 3-Size Frame kit.

If you want a few options for frames, I have models for both (shameless plug) CMYK board, and 3-Size frame.
