Livestream 7 color H2C print

Livestreaming my first test print. 7 colors.

This is after preheating the heat bed. Print starts at the 25 minute mark.

My timer says
15:67 to swap from left to right nozzle after the initial swap.

40:03 to swap from one vortek nozzle to the next, after each has been loaded once.

Startup after bed heating is 25 minutes, if you actually used all 7 nozzles. I cut out the bed heating time, because Bambu added in a setting for low power.

Nice to see how it runs live!

Gives a good feeling about swapping.
I seems that there is also some optimization on the order so it tries to reduce nozzle swaps.

In some cases, color bleeding might require a different order.

The wait in front of the prime tower is the heating of the nozzle, and will probably get longer when higher temperatures are required.

Runs smoothly in my opinion.

If you listen, some of the waiting at the prime tower is the loading of the next filament too. That could happen a little sooner. Should start moving at the point of the toolhead picking up the new nozzle, or even before.

watching now. what is unclear to me is why it waits after retracting the old color. why doesn’t it start pushing the new color closer to the head already? But cool to see it live. I know we all are biased but the vortek switch method looks stable like this and easy to fix if needed. two moving parts really one of the head and the rack.

Because the system has no idea how long the PTFE tube is from the AMS to the print head.

All are cool in their own aspect. No need to always be best at everything, as long as youre good really at most.

It could though. By timing it when it does the ams calibration. While testing which ams is attached to which nozzle

ohhh thats easy just time it on the first feed of a print… they know when they start to push it and when is done and can use that on all the next changes (with a little room like 10cm) its not that we will replace PTFE tubes mid print … or am i crazy?

Nope. But that’s not always correct. If the roll slips, gets tangled and then loosens, etc., there are many reasons why the measured time is not always useful. Only sensors in between in another device, for example, could say for sure where the new filament is located.

I’m pretty sure that BL will optimise this over time and save at least a few seconds at that point.

indeed i mean more i am biased to the one i just ordered thats how humans work. I also feel in a weird way the more complex and flexible way that clearly has downsides has more ‘things’ happening and as a engineer its fun to decode and ponder how they can improve/extend it. In a way a toolchanger is kind of boring…

Indeed a second sensor closer to the head makes more sense but i do suspect they will start doing the ‘pre-feeding’ anyway based on time or atleast to the buffer… But its easy on the sideline to judge but also fun to ponder how they can improve it.

Bambulab thrives on providing a good user experience.

As a programmer, I definitely see room for improvement in this area, but there MUST be no errors, and timings must not be set that cannot be met for whatever reason. That would seriously damage the company’s reputation…

I do agree with that also a soft/hardware engineer here for a few decades. They have a few months to play before others really come into the space the h2c is and why risk things too much first make it stable and proof the system works just as well as the h2d i totally understand… but still we can speculate and ponder what ams3 or ams2c might look like and act.

I agree with all that, except the boring part.

I would say that it could start loading as soon as the previous filament is back in the AMS.
Aas soon as it reaches the filament sensor in the tool head it can wait until the nozzle temperature is reached.

There is a filament sensor in the top of the tool head. If you manually feed filaments it knows exactly when the filament can be grabbed.

But it really is IN the print head, isn’t it? BL will have its reasons for not pushing the filament to this point already, I suppose, but time will tell.
