Load .3mf projects from previous versions of BambuStudio

I just recently updated my version of BambuStudio on my laptop. When I loaded a .3mf project it gave me the prompt that it was from a previous version of BambuStudio and it would load the data geometry only. This is annoying since I had spent quite a bit of time testing different slicer settings. It lost the 4 build plates I had.

Please read older versions of BambuStudio projects.

In general, any data reading that isn’t backwards compatible could be encapsulated, but newer software reading older data should be the norm. I honestly think this should be treated as a bug. Designing data containers that can be forward compatible is not always trivial, but backwards compatibility is easily tested (even if its not easily implemented). Did you actually remove support form something that was represented in the .3mf or was this just a defensive approach?

While I’m not saying this will fix your issues, do yourself a favor and try out Orca Slicer, it’s worth a try and you may be able to read the older files. Orca places a stress on compatibility. It is a clone of Bambu Studio with many more enhancements. It is supported by 3D enthusiasts for 3D enthusiasts. They have a lot of quality-of-life features, some of which Bambu copied in Bambu Studio, but sadly, Bambu has been too fixated on Makerworld to add any real enhancements to Bambu Studio since last summer.

Orca and Bambu Studio can live on the same machine at the same time so there is no downside to having both. Orca BTW tries to bring back many of the Cura features that Bambu left out of Bambu Studio when they ported it from Prusa slicer.

It’s a letdown when updates disrupt your workflow, especially with lost settings and build plates. Software updates should maintain compatibility with older project files, so hopefully, the BambuStudio team will address this in future updates.

Thanks for this. Orca slicer is great. I’m surprised how compatible it is with Bambu Lab’s cloud services. And it has some features that Bambu studio didn’t.

I still hope Bambu recognizes this as a bug and fixes it.
