Looking for advice for model creation and slicer tricks

Hi, sorry in advance for any dumb questions, I’ve somewhat got a grasp on 3D printing and am relatively new to creating and editing models for 3D printing.

For some context, I’ve been working on a project for a little while to print a character from a TV show I use to watch, I couldn’t find any 3D print ready models of him so I tried making one myself using some online resources and existing Blender knowledge. Here’s how it turned out.


Unfortunately for me however, I’m a perfectionist and all the little problems/poor technique/mistakes have driven me to want to insanity and I want to fix the flaws before I move on to other characters.

I’m looking for some advice with multicolour printing, originally I only painted the front and back of the torso and aligned the model with the front facing up so that it’d only change colours for about 7-10 layers and print in red for 98% of the print to reduce waste, time cost and the margin of error. I now want to try and continue the front pattern across the sides and top of the torso to connect to the back side. To help visualise that I drew over some images of Lego torsos

This is what I’ve currently got, there’s only a design on the front and back while the rest of the body is made of red

I’d like to accomplish this which would look much nicer visually as a large Lego model.

The issue is I don’t know how to pull this off without an absurd amount of filament waste or the model taking like 10 years to print. I’m thinking that printing seperate panels then glueing them onto a torso with indents for panels to be inserted would be the best approach but even then I don’t know how to get around some things like the beveled edges or the sloped face. I very well could just dive head first in and try but I feel like I’d end up printing as many prototype/test prints to make sure everything fits together properly as I would with filament waste doing traditional colour change per layer… I don’t know. I want the coloured sides and top but I want to avoid printing the whole thing in one go since it’ll create a lot of waste and could very easily fail before finishing.

I’m asking if anyone has advice for something like this, or could point me towards a video tutorial or a written guide or anything that would be helpful for achieving this.

Oh also equipment wise I’m working with a P1S and an AMS but I’m considering getting an AMS 2 Pro to make my life a bit easier with the 7 colour torso if any of that information is relevant, thank you.

If you’re new, here’s a reality check: the “injection-molded” clarity you see in LEGO pieces isn’t possible with FDM printing. Even LEGO, with high-pressure ABS molding, adds details afterward using dye sublimation, hot stamping, or pad printing.

Still, if you’re a perfectionist, there’s a solution - just beyond FDM printing but a lot easier. Think back to old Testors or Revell model kits with their “water-slide decals.” You cut one out, soaked it, then slid it onto the model. That same method still works today and is perfect for this application.

The bonus: you can now make your own. With an inkjet printer and a basic graphics program like MS Paint, you can design and print decals on blank paper, then finish your 3D prints with professional-looking graphics.

Do a Google search and don’t be surprised if someone already has what you’re looking for in a downloadable print or at least something close enough that you can modify on your computer.
