Makerworld "community" tab was a big mistake

The community tap has been live for just a few days and its 90% print my bla bla bla.

In my eyes, it should Makerworkd needs to ban advertisement of models!
Poles about “should I design X or Y next” is totally fine, but all the posts of:
Have you checked X out yet or Why not try my X or DONT MISS OUT ON X needs to go or its just spam of print my model advertisment

I disagree.
An “advertisement of model” or an update post about a model from designer I follow is actually great use of community tab! That way I don’t have to go to their page, look at the newest uploads etc. Great on browser because that’s like improved “Following” tab of Bambu Handy.

On the other hand, I dislike pointless polls (not Poles. I love Poles :stuck_out_tongue:). Really - who gives a flying rat’s [CENSORED] about “how many rolls of filament do you have?” or “have you printed my X?” or “Should I design X or Y?” (my answer to those polls would be “nonya business” “now for sure I won’t” and “neither”)

I mean - before that community tab, how would a designer announce update to the model that doesn’t constitute a new model, or an improved print profile? They couldn’t! Your suggestion would take away the great practical use of the community tab.

I can show you ACTUAL spam:

Isn’t asking for prints&boost and promising “return of favour” a type of behaviour that’s against TOS?

The fact that MW added the community post into the model page tells you it is THEM who wish it to be used to promote models.

I am going to be adding to new model variants to an existing model this weekend, before the community option I had no way of announcing that.

Whilst there are a few things about the community section I don’t like, this isn’t one of them.

I do not think there should be a feed of all messages from everyone. It should be a feed to users of those they follow, not lots of random noise from everyone p. Whilst I know that option is there, the loudest one is promoted above it.

If you change your uploaded it would ask if you want to notify ppl who have downloaded, and I think also liked it. so that would be one way to say there is a new updated part or print profile.

Right now I don’t know if Following a user has any effect, other than the just added part of the community tab being following.

I initially assumed I would get a notification when user x I follow uploaded a new model. it would have made more sense, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.

perhaps if the community part was on your profile and not just a feed from every user, it would be less print my stuff plz

I agree that it is spam. It might be a tos breach idk.

There should be a feature that all your followers get a notification saying:
MalcTheOracle Just uploaded a new model [Model name, and picture] Click the link to see it [link].

Community could have been a wall on a users profile, that you can subscribe to, by following the user.

There is a tab within the main community tab for messages only from those you follow.

You are walking into legal issues here as notifications in the U.K. and the EU require consent, it is a sub-section of the GDPR called PECR, other countries also have such laws, even the US which follows the so-called CanSPAM law requires the ability to opt out.

As such, this would require a significant increase in the feature to follow all the laws required in each country.

Plus, his far should it go? Ideally you may wish to follow many, be notified about a few and mute others.

No, previously it only notified people who made profile for your model if you said you modified geometry and selected to notify profile creators. It never notified users who downloaded and printed model about updates nor new profiles or anything like that.

It is - you can go to the profile of the user and then “community” tab to show only their posts.

HELL TO THE NO!

I want to browse at my leisure, not get notifications. Also - that’s proooobably illegal in many countries due to spam regulations.

Well, there are already notification settings so opt-out is there, it’s just an additional one. mind you that the 2 new under Community is default ON for notification, and OFF for email.

So the GDPR should be all good.

So all it needs to be is an option to get notified by upload? off by default.
and you would get what you want, but also have the ability to reach all your followers if they wish.

Well, i use it as a “self promotion” also, why wouldn’t i?But i don’t abuse it or have i gone and edit all my models so that they can appear there. I also use it, and i think it’s a great idea, as a way to show some gratitude to other users and creators by showing that we, creators, also know how to give value to other models.

Those polls? Not so much… Or those “make my sign” and “make my keyring” promotions that are always there and make everything else feel lost…

That doesn’t make GDPR good.

You were talking about users being informed not designers.

So all it needs is something that doesn’t exist.

Doesn’t answer this either.

Yeah you’re missing the point of the community “tap.” It is DESIGNED for self promo. If you don’t like it, don’t go to it…

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it but also I don’t think it’s going to be very effective for most people. There’s just too much noise. I posted once and I haven’t looked at it since.

The point is to engage with your followers, not to get new ones. They just need to add it to the mobile app and it’ll become more popular too.

Right but the majority of people have very few followers, yet they were pushing hard to get everyone to participate so the result is just a ton of noise and no engagement with most of it

I already can see everything the people I follow post on the following tab so I don’t understand the point of the community feature

To run polls, share progress updates, and etc.

No you don’t. The following tab in bambu handy doesn’t show you model updates and new profiles. Only new models.

OK, I think I found something FAR worse than polls:
