I am not a advocate of the DSGVO / GDPR, but this particular article (Article 20 “Right to data portability”) is crucial for users. However, I have not yet discovered a method to download or transfer my data if I choose to do so. Since you are combatting bots, no external service can bridge this gap either. I do not intend to turn this into a legal discussion, but I believe it would be equitable to permit users to batch export their own models to other platforms, just as you yourself fully utilize that option with Thingiverse and Printables.
PS: This is not another ‘MW reward system sucks, I will leave the platform’ thread.
I understand someone would want to delete and remove his data.
I don’t understand what batch exporting your models has to do with GDPR? And they don’t use batch export but batch import by scraping the data on the other platforms.
I don’t see the use for a batch export feature since you will not probably be able to batch import it on other platforms anyway? Am I missing something?
The GDPR mandates that any platform (, service, etc.) must offer a means to download or transfer any personal data in a machine-readable format. Article 20 “Right to data portability”
The data subject shall have the right to receive the personal data concerning him or her, which he or she has provided to a controller, in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format and have the right to transmit those data to another controller without hindrance from the controller to which the personal data have been provided
I’m aware that MW utilizes an import feature. While technically, they might utilize scraping, the intricate details of the transfer process are negligible. Platforms like Thingiverse and Printables offer their data in a machine-readable format and don’t inhibit scraping. There is no import for MW data because MW actively prevents other platforms and individuals from doing so. This prompts the need for change imho. While I’m not a legal expert, according to GDPR, if MW operates within the EU, they’re obligated to provide a means to implement what I’m suggesting.
