Makerworld goes to Makerverse
Before I get started, I just need to briefly say something about myself so that perhaps one or two things are not misunderstood.
I myself can only think in German, which means I inevitably have to rely on AI to help translate my texts into English. Without it, I wouldn’t be able to participate in the community, because I am not proficient in the English language. On the other hand, I do have the conviction that German is a very purposeful and precise language—even if it may sound quite harsh to other people with a different native language. I just wanted to put this out there in advance if you are trying to walk along the path of an idea with me.
Makerworld—we know it (or at least most of us here do) since it started as a platform in beta. The beta is over—Makerworld stands and generally does a good job. Personally, I’m honestly not that enthusiastic about some things, which I’ve already written down in one or another post of mine. Fundamentally, I am really satisfied with the development of Makerworld, but my inner monk is still bothered by the statistical manipulation that Makerworld commits with the diluted method of counting downloads. But that is another topic and I don’t want to go into it any further now, because it seems that everyone has already come to terms with it and accepted that it is just the way it is.
I would rather like to put forward a potential idea and introduce you to a new concept and discuss how Makerworld could perhaps become a “Makerverse.” About how “Makerverse” could unfold its potential, how Makerworld becomes “Makerverse,” and above all how, within the “Makerverse,” Makerworld, Bambulab, designers, distributors, and end consumers could all live together in a symbiotic win-win situation. The point is that the structures for the next evolutionary leap of a “3D platform for everyone” are, relatively speaking, already fully in place.
What do I mean by that?
Makerworld connects people on its platform who design models with people who download these models (ideally with a Bambulab printer) and (in the very best case with Bambulab filament) print them. However, a basic requirement for meaningful participation on this platform is necessarily a 3D printer. A person who does not have a 3D printer will not even know what Makerworld is, and will also not be interested in it at all. In principle, we are also just living in a 3D printing bubble. Every now and then, people who do not have a 3D printer will certainly see one or another video on TikTok, Insta or YouTube or elsewhere and might think: “Wow, that’s practical or nice and I could use that too.” However, these people would certainly never buy a 3D printer for it or want to deal with the subject matter. But that one thing they saw in the video—they do want it, because they like it or might actually be able to use it for something specific.
What if, then, one day every person in the whole world, explicitly also those who do not have a 3D printer themselves, would still always be aware of how they could immediately get this product at any time, because they know exactly on which platform they could order it? Let’s imagine a platform that everyone knows, similar to Amazon, Aliexpress, eBay or Etsy. Let’s imagine a platform on which only products are offered for sale that were created by designers all over the world, still available for free download, or alternatively also purchasable as a truly finished physical product. So let’s imagine a platform that everyone knows. Whenever someone needs or searches for something 3D-printed, Makerverse would be the first point of contact for that person—true to the motto: If it doesn’t exist there as a 3D-printed item, then it simply doesn’t exist.
What advantages would such a platform have, and for whom?
Let’s take Etsy as an example. As far as I know (no idea if that’s true), Etsy now also wants only designers to offer their own goods on its platform, or only people who have a valid license for it. However they can control this or whether it is just written down and cannot actually be enforced is another matter. But why are we leaving this big piece of the pie to other platforms when we could just as well shift the sale of 3D-printed items to Makerworld/Makerverse? In any case, this would be the logical consequence to bring something decisive into awareness. Firstly, “Makerverse” would be unrestrictedly number one when it comes to 3D models, because they not only offer their models (those that designers voluntarily make available on Makerworld for free) for free download, but would also officially be the only platform that distributes these models as physical products legally. So that every end consumer would even know that a model found on “Makerverse” can officially be purchased there legally as a physical product, and at the same time would also know that if they found it on another platform (Amazon/Aliexpress/eBay or Etsy), it would be illegal. All major platforms would know that they would be committing an offense if they allowed products to be sold there illegally. Sooner or later, they would no longer allow anyone to sell any 3D-printed items on their platform at all, and would largely distance themselves from it. “Makerverse” would effectively have a distribution monopoly on all 3D-printed items listed on its platform. Every model would have the potential to be produced worldwide and officially distributed regionally.
How would distribution need to be regulated?
First of all, it must be considered that Makerworld would of course be fully integrated into Makerverse, so that on one side, relatively speaking, everything remains roughly as it is currently. On the other hand, an end consumer would now also have the option to buy a model as a physical product via “Makerverse”—basically just like on Amazon, Ali, eBay or Etsy. However, this also means that the designer is responsible for presenting their product well on the website. That means they are responsible for their product photos, as well as their print profiles and the resulting quality of their models, which could be printed as finished physical products by any Bambulab printer in the world. Because imagine you are a designer in Australia and someone in France wants to purchase a physically printed product of your design. How impractical it is to transport a part from Australia to France, and above all how long it would take and how expensive it would be, should be obvious to everyone. It would be completely unprofitable and no one would want to bear such shipping costs for a product that might only cost a fraction of the shipping itself.
So what do we need?
We need something like licensed distributors. In other words, we need people from the community who use a Bambulab printer themselves to carry out print jobs and ship them within their country. They would receive the print jobs and thus also the license to execute this print and ship it to the respective buyer directly via “Makerverse.” To ensure consistent quality, licensed distributors would have to commit to printing all orders sent to them by “Makerverse” using a Bambulab printer and also Bambulab filament. Which would further increase the sales of Bambulab filaments. This would act like a quality seal of the product, as well as the print profile provided by the designer that should be used. Thus, the buyer in France would receive their ordered product very quickly and with low shipping costs in a short time. The good thing is that the product itself is only offered once on this platform; distributors cannot undercut each other on price because they cannot offer the items themselves. After all, they are only assigned a print job because they are the person located closest to the buyer’s place of residence.
It may also be important to understand the following: Makerverse would accordingly be the platform where models are offered by designers, the platform where the end consumer can directly order the desired model, and also the platform through which the payment for the sale is processed directly. However, the end consumer does not conclude the purchase contract with Makerverse or with you as the designer, but rather the purchase contract is concluded between the end consumer and the distributor. The distributor should also be the contact person for the end consumer, for example if the end consumer has special color requests for the model of their choice, so that the print job can be carried out individually according to customer wishes. Likewise for complaints, because neither Makerverse nor the designer of the model can be held responsible for the quality in which the distributor prints, packages, and ships the goods. So we see that the decisive point in this whole story is the distributor, which is absolutely essential for a Makerverse.
What is a distributor, and who does this job?
First of all, it should be mentioned that theoretically anyone who has a Bambulab printer could do this job as a distributor. Distributors are essentially people who have so far purchased licenses from designers to reproduce models at their own expense in order to market and sell them commercially. The biggest problem I see with the current licensing system is that the designer cannot really tell how well their model is actually received as a finished product, because they do not know how many units are actually being sold. In addition, they may sell a license and receive, relatively speaking, “peanuts,” while the person who acquired the license for commercial marketing might earn a “golden ruble” from the designer. (Golden ruble = East German idiom for someone making the deal of their life by generating maximum profit with minimal effort—similar to Scrooge McDuck having dollar signs in his eyes.) So far, it is completely non-transparent for a designer, and with bad luck, they are the one who gets the short end of the stick, because they license their model very cheaply while some licensees make a fortune from it. Moreover, no designer knows at what price their models are ultimately sold as physical products. Every licensee currently has the possibility to set their own prices, and some may even charge exorbitant prices, and someone else might still pay that price. I mean, wouldn’t you feel cheated if you realize that you are selling a license for commercial use of all your models and receive, say, 5–10 euros/dollars per month, while the licensee sells, say, 200 units of your models per month at an average price of 60 euros/dollars? That means they make a profit of nearly 10,000 euros/dollars per month after costs, while you collect 5 or 10 euros/dollars for your creativity each month? Well, I would certainly feel cheated. (This was, of course, a very exaggerated example calculation just to illustrate the basic problem.)
How could such an idea be brought together so that it works completely? How would this need to be regulated? First of all, Makerworld would of course have to provide its platform and integrate it in such a way that a model can only be offered for purchase in a region if there is actually a distributor in that region who can execute a corresponding print job for that specific model. That means a model should not be visible online for purchase in a region where there are no distributors yet.
A distributor should by no means be able to simply offer the entire Makerworld portfolio of models for printing, because in case of doubt this would not even be technically feasible. No, a distributor should have to apply for specific models that they can reliably handle even with high demand in a short time. This would also mean that they always have sufficient capacity available and also maintain a certain stock of materials, whether it be different filaments in type and color or the necessary accessories if certain models require, for example, ball bearings, screws, or some kind of kit. A distributor should always have everything in sufficient quantity for the models they want to distribute in order to ensure fast printing and shipping. For this reason alone, a distributor should have to choose selected models, because it would simply not be technically possible for them to cover the entire Makerworld portfolio alone.
The selection of specific models would have another decisive advantage. We all know the issue with some models where we are presented with an image that does not really match the printed result. No distributor would ever voluntarily want to distribute such a model—for the simple reason that it cannot be printed as it is falsely presented by the designer. A customer who pays for it should be able to expect to receive what they bought. Otherwise, it would regularly lead to disputes between distributor and customer, and since no one wants that, a distributor will carefully handpick their models, choosing only those they stand behind, that print well, and are also popular or have the potential to become popular, so that they can fully utilize their available capacity. In summary: Makerworld provides technical know-how, the distributor provides capacity, and the designer provides their model.
How should pricing be structured, and how is the pie divided?
In principle, the designer should set the price for their model. The price should realistically reflect the value of the model. However, several factors must be considered. First, the designer will only receive part of the total price, since Makerworld/Makerverse will likely take a percentage for providing the platform. I assume, for this example calculation, about 10%, similar to other platforms like Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, or Etsy.
The distributor bears the greatest effort and costs: materials, electricity, wear and tear, and time. No one will willingly act as a distributor if it is not profitable.
Example:
A model uses 250g PLA, single-color, 6 hours print time.
Material: ~4 €
Electricity: ~1 €
Wear (5%): ~0.25 €
→ Fixed cost: 5.25 €
Now: what does the designer want per sale? Fairness suggests the distributor should receive a similar margin.
If designer wants 5 € → distributor also 5 €
Total: 5.25 + 5 + 5 = 15.25 €
+10% platform fee → 16.78 € → ~17 € + shipping
If designer wants 3 € → total ~12.50 € + shipping
With 5 €, both get ~30% margin; with 3 €, ~25%.
This should be decided by the designer, but transparently, so distributors can choose whether to accept. Without distributors, nothing is sold—so fairness is key.
Payout
After a customer purchases, pays, and receives the product, Makerworld/Makerverse pays out to both distributor and designer. Both can choose to receive the money as store credit (similar to vouchers) to reinvest in materials or printers in the Bambulab store, or as a cash payout to their account.
Conclusion
I would be very happy to see an active, productive discussion here and would like Makerworld to also provide a statement on whether this might be an idea that could be implemented in some way in the future.
