If I release an update to an original model and encourage previous downloaders to download and print the new version, will Makerworld count these downloads as new downloads, even though they previously downloaded the original model?
Good question. Idk, but my intuition is that it will not unfortunately. You could upload it as a new print profile. That way people can still print the earlier version for nth reasons.
Edit after though:
Even in that case that might still not count as a new download :S
I think the rule is one DL per model per print profile. Idk
I’m curious to see what other have to say about this
Only one download/print per model per user is now counted.
In your example, no, anyone who previously downloaded/printed your model and then chooses to download/print a new version you replaced will NOT count.
If the update is significant and I MEAN significant, you could release it as version 2.
There is no way any users who benefited from version 1 will know about version 2 though, unless, they follow you and only then if they use the Bambu Handy app and then review their follower list.
Thank you for confirming what I thought was the case. It’s unfortunate because it doesn’t motivate the creator to post improvements to the model to the original upload (which would reach the previous downloaders as well as new ones). Instead, I created a new upload, which as you correctly stated, which will likely not reach the original downloaders and likely won’t beat my original model in search results. Oh well.
I understand a raft of new features are coming to MW to help designers interact with their followers.
I wish to add a couple of variants to an existing model which would best serve as print profiles rather than outright new models (different sizes). I have no way of telling any user that new profiles exist. The model is no longer on the new-models list and adding the sizes as profiles will not put the model there again.
I will add them to the existing model as there is no alternative way to promote this. I will also not gain any new points as those who download the new sizes have already counted towards my points.
I do not do this for the points (I take them, I’m not stupid) and have nothing against anyone that does as that is and should be the norm.
The new features that have been soft-announced include:
- Posts to those who have opted in to receive them
- More content areas to update
- Other ways to promote things to your followers
It would be nice if you were able to mark a model as updated or even promote a new model version (separate from the existing model) so the followers know about that, currently, you can only tell people a print profile has changed.
More ways to interact with users would be amazing. Right now it does not feel like there’s a good way to communicate update information.
FWIW: when I have a new version of something, I generally take this (experimental) approach:
- If it’s a clear improvement (prints better/easier, looks better, solves a problem without side-effects: replace original profile
- If it originates from a response to a specific user’s preference, and it’s an optional version that does not fundamentally change the model: add a profile
- In other cases, with enough difference in purpose or model: remix
Sometimes I add a link in my description, other times I just hope people read comments and find the update.
I’m really pining for a feature that allows broadcasting updates.
I’ve been going back and getting some variations together for previously released models. I don’t even care so much about the points, as much as I care that I want to be able to communicate to people that I’m adding variations they might be interested in!
How about this, @MakerWorld, can we get a “Last Updated” in the sorting options for a designer’s page? Stick it below “New Uploads”. That could be a start at least.
I really want some custom content snippets I can create outside of a model page, but, insert into the page where I choose.
Scenario 1
I decide to add a Patreon account months after I begin uploading models, I now need to edit every model individually to add it. I later change it, I now have to edit every single model again.
For me that is almost 600 models.
Scenario 2
I create a family of related models, in each one I provide links to the other related models as there isn’t much interaction with collections.
I add another entry to the family. No I have to edit all the entries again.
With the content snippets I only need to edit once.
