Maximum distance between P1S and AMS 2 pro

Hi everyone, I’m waiting for my first Bambu Lab P1s with AMS 2 Pro and I have one issue to address. It’s about device placement in a limited space. I can place the printer under the desk, but I won’t be able to fit the AMS. I can place it above the desk (where the Ender currently sits), but there’s a height difference of about 95 cm from the top of the printer to the shelf. Considering the angle of the PTFE tube exiting the AMS and the printer, I need to factor in some loops, so the total PTFE path would be about 120 cm. Will this be too much? Will the device handle it? How will it affect the color change speed? Bambu support said the maximum length can be up to 3.5 m, but I’m afraid that even 1.2 m will negatively impact my workflow. Perhaps you can suggest something interesting that I haven’t considered yet. Unfortunately, a different location isn’t an option.

It can be as far away as the longest data cable connecting the AMS and the printer, I believe the data cable is your limiting factor.

Why not put the paper printer under the desk and have AMS and printer side by side on top?

Besides that, I think 1,20m should be no problem for the AMS. I have currently shy of 1m and don’t hear any difference between start of feeding into the tube until it enters the AMS hub. And color change times probably are governed more by the time for purging. Even if it takes one or two extra seconds for feeding, that will not affect your print times too much in my opinion.
If you regularly do large prints with 4 colors on every layer, you probably want to optimise every bit. For everything else, I wouldn’t bother much and just try it as it fits you best.

Take into consideration that occasionally, you want to access the rear of the printer. Until now, I had the need like every 3-6 months. That probably goes against my idea in the beginning. You might think about a heavy duty drawer mounted to the wall. You could swap printer board and boxes to have the printer easier accessible.

That’s not a good idea. Probably one day, and not far off, it would all fall to the ground together while printing.

I think, I mentioned it, because I would prefer to have the printer somewhere at eye height for several reasons. But circumstances do force you to make compromises, and that certainly applies to your situation.

One more thing comes to my mind: If distance between upper board and top of printer will be ~1m, then 1.20m tube will be certainly quite too short:

  • You want the tube to rather lay in wide arcs. A tight bend will cause far more friction than some extra length. I would plan for a minimum diameter of 25cm.
  • Next, from AMS, you don’t go directly into the printer but into the filament buffer first. By default, the buffer is not located at the top but quite in the middle of the back. You don’t have to mount it at the intended location, but then you probably want to prepare something to mount it somewhere else. I think I have already seen photos, where the buffer was somehow mounted just at the inlet to the print head. Sounds like a good option for you.
  • Last, you want some spare length for pulling out the printer on your base.

I would buy a 2m tube for the beginning, test it with that and you can still cut it shorter when you see that it is excessive.
