Why cant you add a “change filament” option to a layer if you are printing merged objects?
Example:
1.) I can print a keyring with text on the bottom layers using 2 merged STL files (reversed text)
2.) I can print a keyring with a Hueforge image on the top faces using a ‘filament change’ at a particular layer.
I cannot print a keyring with text as above and then add a ‘filament change’ for the Hueforge image.
In this example, the text and lid are STL files added together (viewed from below) so that I can have different colour text but if I try to add a colour change higher up it is greyed out
Are either of the two items shown in the screenshot painted? Painted objects can interfere with other feature choices.
If they are, try removing the paint and instead select each object in turn and set the filament colour it requires.
I assume you have at least two filaments as I can see red and blue, I can’t see the view type you are using as that is cropped out, but it looks like filament. I mention this only as I needed to know you have at least two filaments, if you only had one this menu choice would be disabled anyway. You do appear to have at least two though.
If the removal of paint didn’t work or paint wasn’t part of the equation, there is another way.
Assuming the objects are merged, you could use a different technique to change the filament colour at different heights.
Height range modifiers are very powerful and do far more than change colours, but, we will focus on that.
Select the merged objects (the parent) and right-click.
Select height range modifier
On the left, locate the objects view and select (if not already) the merged object
Expand the objects children
Locate “Layers” and select it
Look at the bottom of the screen
Enter the height in mm you wish the new colour to start and then the end height
Look back up to the objects list and you will see the layer settings you confirmed and select it
Either press the number of the filament (from the pool above) or tap the swatch (it will be black and empty to start) and select a colour.
It will then show as a coloured swatch with the associated colour number
(If you leave it or set it back to black with no number, this range will not affect the colour, but any of the associated settings can be changed for this range)
If you have not explored the height range modifiers, give them a look. You can control so much with them.
They are in addition to the other varied modifiers available.
Having your 3MF, would let me confirm my thoughts.
I just added a second Layer range by clicking the + at the bottom of the screen and now the options to change filaments have appeared.
If I delete either layer then I lose the option box !!!
