Mine did this exact thing this morning. It probed a different number of times in each location, sometimes up to ten times. There was a strand of stray filament stuck to the nozzle, hitting the bed. I canceled the print, removed it with tweezers, and everything returned to normal.
Speculation: it wasn’t getting a clean signal from the nozzle-to-bed contact, and it was increasing the number of repetitions, either averaging or waiting for multiple consistent readings.
