So I’ve had my P1S for half year. Out of nowhere last week my prints started failing in the sense that the vertical outer walls are no longer straight. Throughout the print it looks like the printer skipped a step printed the next layer slightly to the lefts and then later on it’ll go back but it may also happen to the right. It does however only happen on the X axis I found.
I went on YouTube to try and figure out what could be causing this. The shifted layer videos I found were way worse but I still think it’s the right term for what’s happening. I cleaned the carbon rods with IPA and applied no lube. I cleaned the Y axis rods and lubed lightly. Same for the Z rods. The three Z screws I cleaned thoroughly and relubed with the supplied white grease. I cleaned the belt pulley underneath a relubed lightly to get rid of the slight squeek when the bed homes. And on the back I loosened the belts and used a video to make sure the belts ride evenly on the pulleys.

However, all to no avail. The pics attached are of a print done in 50% silent mode because I thought speed was a factor. It happens with all sorts of filaments. Elegoo PETG, Sunlu PLA, etc. I’ve thrown away many a print the last week bar one made with eSun PLA+. I’d really like to remedy this so let me know what to do. Thanks!
I had a different brand of printer that started doing just that and the bearing in the stepper motor was bad. I replaced the motor and it cleared right up.
I can’t imagine what improvement I have installed that can cause this. There’s no physical interference. Nothing is hitting. I’m sitting next to the printer to observe. Randomly it will just print a few layers an x amount to the left before returning back to the correct position.
with the power removed try to turn it through a full rotation and see if there is any difficult spots or if it feels not smooth.(there will be a certain amount of cogging due to the nature of steppers but should be easy to turn). my bad motor had a spot where if got real hard to turn past.
i would try changing your SD card to another sd card of high quality. Sometimes these cards go corrupt and you get writing/reading errors that lead to such problems.
It looks like your filament is extremely wet, that’s all of that ‘layer shifting’ I think. I’m pretty sure it’s just the filament bubbling up in the print because the water expands when it gets heated up.
well if you are sure that you have nothing that interferes and since you said
then you can answer if you hear a rather weird and distinct noise from your stepper motor(s) just before the shift if yes then something is causing step loss.
if you don’t hear that noise then check if your nozzle and extruder assembly is tight and while at it check if the nozzle is still straight and not bend
Interesting perspective. That would explain why it differs per filament and doesn’t show with some of my PLA. Good excuse to snag that Sunlu AMS heater on that it’s on BF sale.
Yep. I don’t know much about the Sunlu AMS heater, but one thing about Sunlu is I find that they aren’t very good about evenly drying filament. But it would differ on filaments because PETG absorbs a lot more moisture than PLA
I have also had issues with prints due to sd card issues, but the problem is not the sd card… it’s the printer. I’m not sure if they are using a crappy reader/writer or what… but I only use good, name brand cards from reputable sellers. I’ve also run what my P1S is saying is a bad card through various disk tools (anywhere from Windows disk check all the way up to a full surface test on a paid version of Hard Disk Sentinel) without errors. I thought maybe the P1S corrupted a file on the card, but I can copy everything off the card to a temp folder, clean/wipe the sd card and reformat, copied the files back, and had zero issue. If something was wrong with the files themselves (ie: corruption), I should’ve gotten the same issue as soon as I put the card back in (but it worked fine). I’ve even gone through the list of steps the manufacturers list to check the SD cards and they all pass fine. If the P1S can detect something wrong, one of these tools certainly should be able to as well, right??
I wonder if the P1S just doesn’t like certain brands of cards. I don’t think I’ve seen an official “compatibility list”, though.
