TLDR;
- Missing setup/how to use instructions
- Clumsy first time setup
- Time consuming setup for every print
- Stickers for plate recognition don’t work
- Unreliable: prints may fail depending on shape and closeness to plate corners
- Negligible energy saving.
I just got the JUUPINE GECO plate and from my point of view it gets a zero for user experience.
Starting from the instructions that come with it:
Which are not helpful at all in understanding how to properly use the plate in connection with the slicer and the printer.
First of all it says to set the temperature to 0°C, while that is not even possible because if you try to that the slicer will show the following error:
Secondly the slicer takes in two values for the plate temperature, one for the first layer and one for the rest of the print. The instructions don’t specify which one to set.
Thirdly it doesn’t say anything about how to set up the slicer profile for the plate, you need to find that out on your own after some trial and error or by asking around in forums.
After you figure all that out you can finally start printing, but then you get the following warning from the printer:
At this point you understand what maybe the stickers that come with the plate are for, even though that is not mentioned anywhere in the instructions. So you put the sticker on the plate and try to print again, but then you still get the same warning. Then you notice that the position of the sticker is not exactly where the QR code is on Bambu Lab Textured PEI plate:
so you move the sticker to match the QR code position and try again, but still get the same warning. At this point you just give up and accept that the printer will keep showing that warning for every print and you will have to manually dismiss it each time. I don’t want to disable the plate detection completely because that has proven to be useful in the past to avoid printing on wrong plates.
Finally there are posts with images of destroyed GECO plate because it was used with PLA Silk, so you can’t use that material with this plate, but this is not mentioned anywhere in the instructions that come with the plate.
The product eventually works as promised, but the whole experience of getting there is very frustrating and could be greatly improved with better instructions.
So these are my instructions (based on my understanding, any feedback is more than welcome) to use the JUUPINE GECO plate in Bambu Studio:
- Printer: select
Textured PEI Plateas the global build plate from the dropdown menu.
- Project filaments: click on the triple dot menu next to the filament you are using and select
Edit.
- Filament settings dialog: set the
Initial layerand theOther layerstemperature to 1°C
- Filament settings dialog: click on the saving icon and prefix the profile name with
GECOto remember that this profile is for GECO plate.
- Repeat steps 2 to 4 for all the other PLA filaments (e.g. Matte) you plan to use with the GECO plate.
Depending on the shape and position of the parts you can get failed prints from time to time, for example the following rings did not adhere well to the plate (I had previously cleaned the surface with isopropyl alcohol):
Another part I printed had defects because it was located near one of the corners of the plate.
From the point of view of the energy saving I calculated that in my conditions (1h of print per day on average) I would save 3€ per year so definitely not worth the hassle.
I don’t think I will ever use it so I am gonna sell it.
