Need help breaking a habit

For the better part of 3 months I check makerworld like every hour to see if I’ve gotten any new downloads for my files. I’m now over 1k on all the things so the numbers don’t tick up for one download or a print. I log in now and there is no apparent update. I need help breaking the habit of constantly checking makerworld. Any tips?

Force yourself to stop for a while until you are accustomed to not checking, then make a plan to check once or twice a day.

I understand your struggle. Try the following:

  • Use your phone’s settings or a dedicated app to set a daily limit of 5-10 minutes for the app in question. Stick to this limit strictly.
  • If setting limits isn’t effective, consider deleting the app entirely to remove the temptation.
  • Avoid Circumventing Limits! If you find yourself using the browser or a PC to access the same content, recognize this as a sign of dependency and consider seeking additional support or help.
  • Spend your time with family, friends, or your significant other. Communicate your plans to them and arrange activities that do not involve smartphones, such as camping, hiking, or a wellness retreat. Hand your smartphone to your partner during these activities to ensure you remain disconnected.
  • Identify the triggers that lead to your excessive use and find healthier alternatives to address those. If quitting cold turkey feels too daunting, gradually reduce your usage over time until you reach a more manageable level.

Just start constantly checking the forum instead…

lol. Honestly this is probably what I’ll do. I was doing it for a bit but then got sucked into arguments.

You can start a gradual approach by turning ON email notifications. You’ll probably be checking email more often, but I think it’s a viable small step towards removing the habit of opening the app or the website.
This seems to work very well for me, especially on weekdays when I am (or should be) busy with other things.
Also, I am not addicted and could quit 3d printing any time so leave me alone.

you could start smoking instead…

Be careful what you wish for… having a passion in life is something to be cherished. If makerworld is your thing today, tomorrow, for the next year, so be it. Be kind to yourself. Life is short!

One of us… one of us… one of us…

I need a t-shirt with this written on it.

Lol. Yeah I think thats my move. Move over here and get addicted to the forums.

I had this happen to me as well, The moment I cashed in my gift cards and the new points system came into effect, I check every once in a while now. Same happened with the forum, I was waiting for the A1 to come back, when it did, my pull to the forum was lessened.

I guess what I’m trying to say is maybe you need some sort of release, some sort of reward / prize / goal for all of your dedication to checking in constantly. For me, both happened at the same time when I exchanged all my gift cards for an A1 Combo with a ton filament.

I’m still collecting points, but I don’t have the urge to check up on them constantly, firstly, because it’s taking ages to accumulate them, and secondly, because at the moment I don’t feel the need for anything from the store.

You might feel more draw toward the prints / downloads than the points, and that I feel is going to be a lot harder to get over IMO.

If that’s the case, maybe dedicate more time to designing stuff and uploading, which in turn will accelerate your numbers.

It certainly could be worse - folks here post lots of really helpful stuff!

This could be a feature request: Allow users to self-administer account lockout for a fixed period of time, such as a 1-week lockout where the user has no access to the account. Or automatic lockout at a fixed interval, such as an automaitc 48-hour lockout after the last log-in, to force a 48-hour break between log-ins.

Get some models on Printables, then instead of continually checking maker world, you can split the time and continually check Printables too :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

More seriously though, I was the same to start, but after a while I just figured that nothing I was doing by checking was actually serving any useful purpose except taking me away from designing and printing, at which point I more or less just started checking every couple of days, then weekly, and now I have to actually remind myself to go back once a month or so to look in on progress.

I tend to have models elsewhere, but I’m not really too bothered about loads of downloads or votes to help get points towards ‘stuff’, I’m more interested in seeing the downloads and comments because people are finding the models useful. If I don’t get ‘stuff’ as a result, that’s just fine, it’s the people finding my makes useful that I get the real kick from.

Yeah I think you are onto something with uploading to multiple sites. I will say I’m seeing more downloads on thingiverse than anywhere else. People on cults have been downloading my free models a good amount. I get more comments on makerworld over any other place but I honestly don’t put in as much time into other places as I do makerworld.

If you are being serious in the words you have written, we are talking about addiction, then more things feeding the addiction is not the answer.

No drug user or gambler was better served with more of what was causing them harm.

Do simple things:

  1. ONLY upload on one day a week.
  2. ONLY review comments, points, and other such things one day a week.
  3. Find something else to do.
  4. Get off social media as this is only more of the same.
  5. If design is your moment of bliss and reading comments is your moment of harm then spend more time on one than the other.
  6. Aim for more models where the design time is great so you spend more time on that part.

If you are truly addicted, this is a disease you can get help from and it should be treated with all the seriousness and none of the stigma.

Great suggestions right here. The fact that you admit that it is a problem is a great step, now you just have to remember that checking it wont change anything, you wont get any more boosts or downloads for checking it all the time. Start doing it once a week!

Congrats on hitting over 1k downloads, that’s a huge achievement! Breaking the habit of constant checking can be tough, but one trick could be setting specific times during the day to check for updates, like once in the morning and once in the evening. You could also try keeping yourself busy with other activities or projects to keep your mind off it. Remember, your hard work speaks for itself, and whether you check once an hour or once a day, your creations are still making an impact!
