Need help please! Printing failure X1C, PLA, AMS

Hi there,
I´m new here - we have 5 BambuLab printers and already some experience.
But currently there is a failure we cannot solve …

Printing surface is really really bad and we already:

  • changed hot end
  • changed hot end as complete assembly
  • changed extruder
  • switched to other material batch

It is a X1C with AMS, Bambu PLA matte.

See pictures please - we really don´t know what else we could do …

But for some strange reason I can see any screenshots for the settings and no images or printed issue either.
I would love to help but unfortunately my crystal ball is in for a service and polish.

Ok, seems the pics were stuck in the digital nirvana, visible now.
This a terrible first layer.
If you did not clean the plate properly please do so using a sponge and warm soapy water followed by IPA.
If you did not calibrate the filament please confirm and if in doubt correct it.

In case all this is fine have a look at the advanced settings in Studio.
If your overall prints are great you can try to just reduce the flow ratio for the first layer slightly.
It is not an ideal solution but if things like nozzle distance are not perfect it is a good way to compensate and to get a smooth and clean first layer.

Grabbed the old chicken bones and toss them around.
They tell me you have upgraded the firmware or Studio lately but as said they are old bones and not always right…

There were quite a few similar topics and over the decades I encountered first layer and other quality issues with my prints myself a few times.
You know what makes this so funny?
It is ALWAYS black filament that plays up…

But it’s not only the first layer that looks terrible.

We have done all the measures you suggest :frowning:

Wow…
The first layer looked bad, this looks shocking.
Is this for all machines or just one?
If nothing changed I go with the filament.
Try a small test print to not waste too much time and filament.
Like s 3mm cube printed solid with nothing fancy in the settings.
Observe how the infill is put down.
If it is very inconsistent it could be a sign of a partial hotend block, a failing thermistor, dried out heat transfer compound or the filament slipping in the extruder.
You have to check and rule out one by one.
See if a different colour or black from a different vendor shows the same flaws.

The last time I had results this bad I found the thermal paste for the heater and temp sensor had turned into cracked and rock hard cake.
Sometimes the temp would be so low the filament won’t come out, at other times PLA came out steaming and popping LOL

Yes, it´s shocking. Especially as we’re printing for a year now … day & night on 5 Bambu printers and have never seen a print like this.

  • same with other colour (we also tried green Bambu PLA matte instead of black Bambu PLA matte)
  • same with new hot end
  • same with new hotted incl. new thermistor
  • same with maintained extruder

That means in my opinion, that neither clogging, nor failed thermistor or failed thermal grease can be the reason.

We absolutely have no idea how to proceed …

Are you doing anything to dry your filament before use?

No, never before.
We print that much, that we take new filament out of the vacuum foil, put it in the AMS and print until it´s gone. We only have vacuumed material in stock.

New filament isn’t necessarily dry even in the plastic bag still vacuum sealed with desiccant packed inside. Seen it myself be too wet right from the bag to print well. Opened spools depend on your ambient humidity and storage techniques.

It all depends on how long it’s been in the bag and the ambient humidity it’s been exposed to. Those bags are generally not impermeable to water. They really slow water infiltration but don’t stop it which is why you can’t trust new spools to be dry.

Water in filament is a problem. There are posts like yours nearly every day. These printers print relatively fast which means higher filament use rates which means less time for adhered water to evaporate out as filament heats headed into the extruder. Water can get vaporized in the extruder leading to pressure pulses in the extruder that glop out filament uncontrolled leading to overdeposition in some areas and underdeposition in others.

You issue may not be water but it looks like it to me.

Is it something to do with flow calibration ? temperature ?

I see and now understand your frustration.
I just guess that you don’t print for hobby use on this scale and that this a big issue…

You might not like what I suggest and I won’t blame you in any way if you don’t to try…

I assume that all printers act up like this and that you use the same studio version for all.
Do a backup of your Studio install or just rename the program files and user folders and do a clean and fresh install of studio.
If you have just use a spare laptop and to do a clean install on it.
Ignore what you have and got used to and just try a simple test print.
In the rare case of this test resulting in a nice and clean print you found the culprit.

Is there REALLY nothing that changed?
Like updates for Studio/printer firmware ?
Is this an issue of existing, reliable files failing or do you get the same terrible result for test prints created from scratch?
I am asking those stupid questions because Studio (at least on my end) loves to make a mess whenever things change.
I had perfectly working 3MG files that created terrible prints just because Studio got updated…

Try to apply logic when and where possible!
When did this problem start?
What happened in the time from before where prints where fine until they suddenly kept failing?
Like it or not but only too often we humble humans just forget obvious things.
Some loving and caring parents even forget that they went shopping with their kids and get home without them - look it up it seems insane!

I am NOT accusing Bambu of using the Chinese death clock on our printers.
But sometimes things just come together in the wrong way.
You download some little update for print settings and because that’s all the update state end with your old 3MF files not longer working as expected.
Or you activated the advance/developer setting for something and just forget to turn them and their default changes off again.
It might be just a tine little thing or oversight giving you the grief.
Take a break, clear the mind, go for a walk, whatever really…
Then try to back to when things were still fine and try to work out or remember what changed.
ONE printer behaving badly I explain in all sorts of ways. 5 at once only leave so many possible sources…
And as said before. it always seems to be black filament.
You ruled that out, so I just have to assume to the source is neither in the filament, nor the printers…

Perhaps it makes sense to follow the path of the filament to resolve what does look like a flow issue.

  1. Since you tried different batches, it is unlikely that the filament diameter and roundness are out of tolerances but it is an easy check on the first meter or two.
  2. That filament has been at sea for over a month. In my experience, it pays out to dry filament as it can be quite moist when arriving due to moisture diffusing through the bag. And Matte filament offers easier water penetration than Basic filament due to the increased internal surface area from the extra pigmentation (most likely carbon black in this case).
  3. Once loaded, the filament in the AMS needs to travel quite a way through different PTFE’s. Since you seem to be printing a lot, it may be worth checking/renewing the PTFE’s. Start with the one from the printer entry to the toolhead or, if you use a different set-up, the tightest bend. Make sure all PTFE cuts are really straight and cleanly cut. With the Toolhead PTFE done, you could also try a print from the rear spool. But do not forget that there are PTFE’s, connectors and a switch in the AMS as well (just in case).
  4. You mentioned the extruder twice but in the first post you mentioned that it was replaced, in the third that it was maintained. Maybe the extruder teeth have worn? And/or the gear teeth? Hopefully, there’s nothing wrong with the extruder motor.
  5. Finally, we come to the hot end which you have focused on so far. So that is most likely OK now (clog free, new thermistor, heater works, new paste,…). So there are unfortunately further possible root causes in the thermistor connector to the tool head board and the tool head board itself…
