Need ideas on my project!

Teacher Appreciation Week in America starts soon… I have an idea for it, but I want your input. It is a sticky note holder that will have a customizable name/ logo plate on the front. Near the logo holder, there will be a slot for two writing utensils. They will drop down into a receiving tray below. Any thoughts on this… or other items teachers might like? I have a little over a week to print over 100 of them.



I’ve also been thinking about adding a TPU base. Do you think that would help it stay stationary while I am writing?

You could extrude a section on the botton side to give yourself a recessed area to put some neoprene rubber tape (one side has adhesive) that runs in all one section or in multiple sections across the bottom of the entire thing.

They make some that’s like 1.5mm thick.. So a 1mm extrusion bottom / chamfer edges and it will stick up just enough to sit on the rubber base instead of the plastic.

Thanks for commenting! Is there a difference between Neoprene and TPU? I know TPU build up a greasy feeling rather fast which is a downside…

I would think placing the neoprene / rubber would just simply look cleaner as it becomes part of the model then instead of a holder for it.

Basically similar to how many injection molded parts are assembled with other materials

What if I were to make an insert out of tpu that is flush with the bottom of the unit? I only have access to TPU, and do not want to rush to another solution just yet.

I believe HOLDALL_Tools is talking about buy the Neoprene of of something like amazon. you can’t print it out as far as i know.

Also, the middle of that deep V cut in the middle is a natural break point regardless of how you print it. You’ll want to build supports inside it to give it strength. The supports can be decretive, but they’ll need to be at least 1.2 mm to 2 mm thick. Give me a minute and I’ll show you a quick image of what I’m talking about.

TPU is good, but this sort of non slip furniture pad that has tape on one end is also pretty awesome

I dont have a good one to recommend but the tape/glue quality should be assumed to be bad, and it helps to model a valley for it to sit in.

That looks pretty cool! I will say that I was going to add a circle where the triangle comes together, but after printing, the structure is plenty solid enough to endure someone writing on it.

He is. I just don’t have immediate access to it. I think it would be much easier to use tpu and model a TPU grip on the bottom of the unit, as opposed to purchasing over 100 pads.

@Alweg223 I haven’t used TPU yet, but from what I’ve herd it looses it’s “tackiness” rather quickly (I hope saying that isn’t tacky). That would be my only concern.

With that said, at the end of the day, it’s your design. Power on and may the Schwartz be with you.

I’ve found TPU needs a certain amount of weight/gravity into it before it really holds well as a nonskid pad, and you might want to design a test to make sure the ~1oz of a stickynote pad gets you there. It’s probably ok writing on it, force transmit down, but plucking from it might be skiddy

I think you guys are right. I have made a few modifications to it based on the feedback I have received here. First, I am making it into a wedge shape, which will make the structure stronger. I am lowering the writing angle to be easier on the wrist… this also brings the center of gravity down to help the TPU grip better.
