Got the printer on tuesday, having issues. They seem related. The printer is either not detecting the filament in print head, or it gears aren’t grabbing it. I lean towards it not sensing it, but not sure. Its an H2S with an AMS on it. I’ve torn the head down and reassembled it many times already. If I manually feed filament it seems happy, that is if I physically push the filament into the the grasp of the extruder gears. It will print for a bit, but looks to be under extruding. I’ve cleaned the toolhead, there is nothing it there. I’ve changed nozzles and even gone to PLA from my usual ABS. If I manually feed it with the AMS connected, it will go for a while like I said, then get to a point where there is not enough force, I guess, to extrude the filament. It goes to cut it, and I was running into an error there with the cutter. I skipped a tooth on the cutter lever thing. Thats been fixed, but still having extruder issues. Played with the tension, but nothing seems to make it happy. Any suggestions? I have a ticket open with support.
Have you tried feeding from the external filament holder? Sounds like there’s too much drag in the PTFE line, however it would have given an error.
The best thing I’d do is put in a ticket. Mine has given me no such issue since I opened in 900+ hours ago.
I haven’t gone direct from an external filament, but have done so with a loose filament in the tool head. I’ve shortened the PTFE line as some have suggested, also lengthened it with some capricorn tubing. Same result. The filament feeds all the way to the extruder gear, stops, and backs out. If I pull the ptfe tube from the toolhead after it inserts, I can feel the bite of the extruder.
Can you run a cold pull? You can select it from the menu.
Also, I would try running from an external spool to remove the AMS unit from the equation.
you need to get something working and then work backwards
If you’ve taken the filament sensor out, it can be easy to damage the ribbon cable when you put it back in as the cable runs between the two mounting holes.

I suspect the cable to be the cause, just odd that if I manually feed filament its “happy”. Does the replacement sensor come with the cable? It doesn’t say on the wiki, but looks like it in the store.
I won’t ask how you know. We are both probably learning the hard way.
I believe to manually feed the filament the sensor must be working.
The replacement sensor does come with a cable but it is a pain to install.
so you’ve printed from a spool without the Ams? And have you done a cold pull?

I’ve taken the hotend/nozzle off and swapped it with a new one. The original had a bit of clean cut filament in it, pulled it out with my fingers, but changed it just in case. It will extrude as long as I don’t tell it to print. Heat it up and tell it to extrude. I will try printing direct from a spool tomorrow. Very frustrating after only 5 days.
I suspect the other poster is correct. Contact support about the filament sensor.
Took the AMS off and running it from the side spool. Its printing fine so far, I have a 7 hour print going. What could be wrong with the AMS since its feeding the filament to the head? The filament is really tough to pull out of the AMS, don’t know if it should be. Any suggestions on a next step?
From here in out, work your way from wherever the filament journey begins to the nozzle. In this case your first step should have been to take the ams out of the equation. Just to check, you have the external spool filament running through the external tube and not the buffer, right?
While we are checking, you have the AMS running through the buffer, right?
When you load the AMS, can you watch the filament go through the PTFE tube from. The AMS into the printer? If not, your issue is upstream.
If so, then check the buffer next, then extruder, then nozzle.
In your case, since you are printing fine in the external roll. It’s probably within the ams. Now, if when you feed the filament into the AMS, if you can see the fildnent go all.the way through the ptfe tube to the printer but you’re still having problems, the first thing you need to do is reseat the ptfe tube in the orange couple, going into the printer.
If filament is going through the AMS and out the ptfe tube to the printer, watch the buffer when it’s feeding the printer. My money is on some problem from the coupler to the buffer given you can print on the external spool.
Im printing use the same top port as I was with the AMS. So it goes through the buffer. I wasn’t sure what the bottom port was for since its not labeled, and like most people, I didn’t read the manual. When the AMS was attached, the filament would go all the way to the extruder, and if I stopped it there, I could feel the bite of the extruder when trying to pull it out. It just seems the strain on the extruder from the AMS was to much. Pulling filament through the AMS by hand is a pain. It is really tight coming out, not sure if that’s normal. It also leaves bite marks on the filament.
Also, I’ve watched the buffer when the AMS was on, and it would cap out to the right when the filament got to the extruder and the extruder wheel was going counter clockwise. The extruder would then spin clockwise and push the filament out and the buffer goes back to the middle.

Ok, so getting frustrated. It worked with the old firmware, so I rolled it back, no luck. I also just got in the AMS HT and hooked that up. Does the same thing, so its not the ams. I have printed 40 hours on the external spool with no issues. It seems like it’s a firmware problem or software issue. Anyone have any ideas?
Also, I went and told the printer I was feeding from the external spool, but kept it running through the AMS. It grabbed and started extruding until the tension from pulling got to high. This all makes me think it a software something. Any thoughts?
Yes, the filament sensor. You waved that away. The ONLY other thing can be the PTFE. If you’re not getting errors, that’s odd. I don’t suggest pulling filament as you describe.
Check the PTFE tubes in the AMS. From the AMS to the splitter or buffer, whichever you have. Check the PTFE from the buffer to the print head. Is this thin in areas. Is the ID (inner diameter) larger than a new piece of PTFE? Are there any curves that are too tight? If you keep pulling the filament manually you risk damaging something, if you haven’t already.
The filament sensor has a fragile FPC that is easily torn or damaged. Especially if you ham fist it’s removal.
Since you will tell me you’ve already done all of this and carefully at that, then I offer you good luck.
I’ve replaced/tried other PTFE tubes on the exterior of the printer. I will replace the internal next and see if that helps. I wasnt planning to pull filament that way other than to test a theory that it seems to be software related. Is the filament sensor bypassed when using the external spool? If it is, then it still may be the issue.
The filament sensor tells the printer if filament is feeding to the extruder.
There is no way to bypass it. So no, it does not skip when using the external spool.
K, so we know the sensor is good. Going to run new tubes inside the printer tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
New tubes run, same issue. It gets to the extruder, it rotates like its grabbing it, then spits it back out. Could it be the buffer? I took it off and checked it, it all looks alright, but doesn’t mean there couldn’t be an issue. I did another 6 hours of prints off the external spool again today with no issue. As soon as I add either AMS, it starts complaining.
