New metallic filament from Formnext

Yesterday I was in Frankfurt at Formnext and had the chance to see the new H2C (it didn’t impress me much, the new Prusa INDX system seems more efficient and robust), but what really impressed me was the new metal material with AISI316 they were showing, truly beautiful. It’s a shame they didn’t want to tell me (or were unable to tell me) much about it.

Yeah that steel material is impressive

and btw the INDX system is not from Prusa, it’s in a Prusa but the system is from Bondtech

I really hope they end up releasing that new filament - was anything said about the post-processing to smooth it?

Yeah they mention sanding and buffing it.
It was really heavy, nothing like the steelfill from colorfabb, it was a bit of a tease as they really didn’t want to go into too much detail and saying we will learn more about it next year

Is that a filament that Bambu was teasing or some other brand?

It’s from Bambu

That looks great. I have tried some Bambu Lab PLA Metal, but they don’t look anything like these.

The next round of big breakthroughs can come from the filaments. In addition to the metal look, I would like to one day print some ceramic / porcelain cups and pods (may be print them out then heat in a kiln).

I need this filament in my life. I wonder if its magnetic

didn’t try getting a magnet to it, that would have been a good idea! but i suspect it might just be, it really felt like a piece of steel, it was impressive, i can’t wait to hoard a bunch of rolls when they finally release it

If they can release it for less than 40 USD a Kg.

That will be a great filament.

that would be nice, but i don’t see that happening, this will probably be a pretty expensive one

One can only hope. I think the market for these exotic filaments is insane.

The PPA-CF is $149.99 for 0.75 kg. This should be more expensive, so more likely > $149.99 for 0.5 kg.

Where are you trying to pull that comparision out of? I see no connection between the two besides you just picking out expensive filaments. Comparing it to PPA-CF shows no comparison. We do not know what the base material will be. This will most likely be a PETG or PLA.

On the 40 dollar front, I was being hopeful. I think that a more reasonable price (if this ever even gets released) is around 90 dollars.

A better comparison would be Protopasta Stainless Steel HTPLA or Prusament PETG Tungsten.
Protopasta: $99
Prusament: $260

With these high density filaments, saying 1 kg is kind of misleading. I think it is better to measure it in meters. A normal spool is around 330 meters where a high density filament might only be 90 meters. You are getting much less.

Now, if they presented it as an engineering filament, this would be a different story. Like the Prusament, the high cost is fine because it has a specific purpose. What Bambu presented is purely aesthetic. They would be asking you to pay 20 times as much just for a nice finish.

Yes, I just picked one expensive one for comparison because I THINK exotic filaments probably won’t be cheap.

But we don’t have any info (engineering vs aesthetic) so these are purely speculations. Your guess is as good as mine and vice versa  . I will take it if it is $40 per kg as you estimated.

you dont need to let your memes be dreams, its available now, for dollars

It is an educated speculation, but you are right.

The way that I look at it, any filament with a 90 percent fill is not going to have great strength because of the lack of internal adhesion. It will be a brittle mess. I think this is just for looks.

Exotic is not really defined well either. I think the base polymer is more important than the fill. They claimed that the pieces that they showed at formnext were printed on a p1s, so I do not think it will be very exotic. I give it a 60 percent chance that it will be PLA.

I wish that they had a video of it actually printing and how the parts looked like before post processing. They want to gauge interest but do not show the whole story. They could be putting makeup on a pig for all we know.

That’s interesting because CincinnaatiDesigns also compared it to similar Protopasta brand filaments. But if this type of filaments are already out there, why did BL take the trouble to debut on Formnext?

I did not know that. char25

This is a much higher fill than the other available options. They had to have done something special.

It is odd because sunlu or any other brand has a compareable product. Makes me wonder where they are getting this.

For example the protopasta is only 60 percent fill. Another 30 percent is a big jump. (Fill is by weight not volume to clarify)
