I am planning out a dedicated space for my printers, filament and a workbench for tinkering and assembling. I expect to go through a few revisions before I get things right. I’m hoping some of you out there would be willing to share pictures of your setups, especially a tinkering workbench and what storage options you use for small parts like screws, magnets, and electronics. My hope is to cut down on my personal revisions and get some inspiration / tips of what you find most beneficial and helpful before I get started.
My space is currently empty so it’s a complete blank slate. I’ll be buying some furniture like workbench and will either buy shelving for the printers or build it (I also have a woodworking workshop).
Type “Ikea 3D printing” into Google Images or ‘Ikea’ into MakerWorld and check out the photos users have posted in the reviews. Alternatively, adding the word “workbench.” You’ll find tons of inspiration from complete setups, even if you don’t use Ikea furniture.
Ikea’s workench back panels are especially practical - you’ll find hundreds, probably thousands, of prints and inspiration for them there.
If you are planning your space to have a workbench against the wall, consider that you need access to the back of the machine fairly often. Wheels on a workbench are super useful, if I could go back and redesign my benches I would add this sorta thing
They let the table be ultra flat down on the floor and rock stable when in position, but able to be kicked up and wheeled away from the wall when you need to inspect wtf is going on in tubes or whatever
I have an H2D sitting on top of a kitchen base cabinet, with wheels and a grab handle. Was all from local DIY stores. I had to put a sheet of plywood under the cabinet for extra rigidity. If you use a drawerline cabinet (drawer on the top, cupboard below) you also get storage for nozzles etc instead of just a filament cupboard. Cabinet width can be whatever you want; it’s useful to have extra worktop to remove items from a build plate.
On a standard worktop the distance from the floor to the top of the AMS with lid open is over 180cm (6 feet), I could not reach any storage above it. if you can afford it and are not an able bodied adult male you might look into getting a Newton Lifter for reaching heavy boxes of filament above shoulder height.
