New to 3D printing and experiencing some print issues

Hello,

As a newcomer to the 3D printing world I’m trying to understand why certain things happen, and how I can possibly avoid them in the future. At the same time I’m also still learning what the limits are of this 3D printer such that I can adjust my expectations accordingly.

First some details about my setup:

  • Bambu A1 Combo (with PEI Textured plate)
  • Only using Bambu filaments with Auto Flow Calibration

Over the last few days I printed some models that don’t look entirely correct I think. I’ll post some examples below.

I used the default 0,20 mm A1 profile for this, no other changes. Model used is the Airfield Searchlight. Looking through the comments, it doesn’t appear to be a problem other users are having (their prints look smooth). Filament used is Bambu PLA Metal Copper Brown Metallic.

Over on the Discord I learned that it’s possibly some VFAs (Vertical Fine Artifacts) and using a too low speed for outer walls (I was using the designer provided print profile). There also seems to cases of ghosting. This model is part of a paid pack. Filament used is Bambu PLA Matte Scarlet Red.

This piece is part of the same paid model pack. You can see the ghosting start where it drops in speed (see slicer image). Also on Discord they told me this is due to the Slow printing down for better layer cooling setting. Would the ghosting effect be minimized with this setting turned off? Another user said that it’s possible I’m within the stepper motor vibration range (speed for outer wall was set to 60). Filament used is Bambu PLA Matte Ash Gray.

Another example are these Christmas themed tea light holders. There are some obvious (ghosting?) artefacts near the holes and seam line. Filament used is Bambu PLA Sparkle Crimson Red.

And then lastly I seem to be having issues with ironing, you can see there is some under extrusion. Probably have to increase the ironing flow? Filament used is Bambu PLA Matte Grass Green.

I know this is a long topic, but I’m hoping to learn why these things are happening and how I could possibly avoid them in the future. Apart from these (minor?) issues I’m pretty happy with my first 3D printer.

Hello,

I was looking at your prints and they seem to be of good quality.
The first model is not challenging to print but at speed the print can show som ringing. That is in simple terms the printer bending and vibrating in ways that hurt the print quality.
Printing fast on a bedslinger wil induce this effect.
Looking at the posts for the spotlight I do see som post with people with the same effect on the print.

It is strange that the effect is not on all the layer lines the ridges are on. maybe the slicer decreases speed there automatically

On the red model the ridges going from top to bottom I can’t put my finger on it
but the inconsistent layer lines maybe a product of the print warping and the remain layers not having the required space therefore squishing out

on the brick wall is it not the other way around. Doesn’t the printer speed up in the pink region.
The left model is done printing so the printer can focus on the right print thus speeding up.
But I think it is something to do with a speed change and therefore the filament has les time to cool making it look different and making the line thinner

for the Crimson Red model
it seems that the printer is speeding up to reduce the seam. In Orca and Bambu you can have a look at the settings.
So when the printer is speeding up and not extruding anymore because otherwise you would have a blob at the seem this settings tries to mitigate this

And then the final model the ironing.
Bambu themself have a awesome blog post about this topic I recommend fiddling with the settings described in the blog post

https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/software/bambu-studio/parameter/ironing

Overall minor problems not really problems but just settings that need to be dialed in. And limitations understood with bedslingers.

Glad you are enjoining the a1
I to have this printer and it is awesome being able to print at 3x the speed my old printer used to print at 2 times the quality is mindboggling

Thanks for checking my issues!

As for the brick wall, no it’s slowing down:

I’ll read their wiki article on it again, but was also planning on printing this ironing test print.

Strange expected it so speed up
but that is a reason the wall thickness can change.
Try to set the speed for the model the same like other have said that has something to do with the slow down to let layer cool.

The ironing test print will give you easy readable results. That’s a good one

Hopefully you can iron out all the kinks

Stupid question, but how stable is the table your printer is on? (In reference to the black model 1)

I had all sorts of random wall artifacts on my x1c until I discovered the small table I had set it on would rock back and forth during accelerating rapid movements. A very rigid, high-mass support surface is key to optimal print quality at higher speeds. If you’re in doubt set it on the floor and see if anything improves.

That’s a good question!
The printer has only been placed on the floor, so it’s probably not that either.
