New X1C owner

Just wanted to pop in and say ‘hello.’ I purchased a new X1C a few weeks ago (a week before xmas) and have been messing around with it since. I wanted to share my initial impressions of both the printer and Bambu Lab…

First of all, I should mention that I’m far from a newbie in regards to 3D printing. My first printer was a bed slinging i3 clone, then I moved to a flashforge creator pro (which I eventually converted to RRF), then I built a delta (also running RRF) and most recently I built a Voron 2.4 (350^3) and added an ERCF (filament changer) to that. Obviously, I love tinkering with my printers. I think I’ve been playing with melted plastic for about 8 years now.

The X1C was kind of a whim purchase. First, I wanted something that my wife would be comfortable using when she wants to print something (without asking me to do it) and secondly, it seems to handle multi-filament better than my Voron ECRF.

My first impression of the printer is that it does ABS quite well, though I had to modify the printer gcode to allow a chamber heat up (and a bit of a soak) and the polymaker profile to heat the bed more, and allow a faster fan. (Polymaker loves to curl if it’s not cooled quickly enough. A hotter bed prevents warping, and a higher fan prevents curling.) Honestly, for nearly everything I’ve tried, the printer just works without major hassles.

Sadly, most of the “maker world” things/profiles are useless to me as-is, as they are all for PLA. This is a real disappointment, as it limits the ability of my wife to just dump stuff to the printer using the phone app. Instead, she needs to show me what she wants, then I pull the profile into bambu studio or orca, and change the printer profile to my own (which provides for a chamber heat up) and change the filament profile to my own polymaker ABS (which has a higher bed temp and different fan profiles), and then everything will work. I usually also increase the infill percentage a bit as well.

This is an area where I think bambu could really improve. If I can “fix” nearly any print profile with just a few clicks, why can’t makerworld (and/or the printer) automate that?

(No, I don’t want to use PLA. I printed a lot of PLA and PETG with my delta. I really prefer ABS/ASA.)

Anyway, what I’ve started doing is exporting the plates with my own profiles and saving them to the microSD card in the printer. That makes it easy for my wife to quickly access them whenever she wants.

Finally, the customer service has been pretty good so far. When I first placed my order, I found out that it might take several weeks for it to be delivered. I contacted bambu support and asked them to cancel the order and it was handled very quickly. After I picked up a printer from an authorized reseller (microcenter), I found that the chamber camera focus was way off. I again contacted Bambu’s support, providing a video of the issue, a copy of my receipt, and description. The next morning, Bambu sent out a replacement camera.

So far, a pretty positive experience for a “consumer” 3d printer. If I wasn’t a stickler for using ABS instead of PLA, it would be better. Of course, if I wanted to use PLA, I’d have saved a few hundred dollars and purchased the non-enclosed P1…
