No notification when filament stops feeding

Should I expect a notification when the filament stops feeding to the print head?

Twice now, the filament got tangled but instead of stopping and raising an error for me to fix the issue the printer continues to print in ‘thin air’ not realising the filament has stopped feeding.

This has happened twice in a row now. Surely the printer should stop until the issue is cleared instead of continuing to print with no filament in the feed head. Surely this is a very basic requirement for a printer.

Is there a way to correct this issue or have I overlooked something in a setting somewhere?

Why is your filament tangling? That’s the problem you need to address. It’s not a common problem. Quite the opposite.

Alas, the printer can’t tell if the filament isn’t feeding. If it sees filament in the filament path, it assumes the filament is moving. If you get a tangle (or more common, an extruder jam), the printer will keep on going like nothing is wrong.

Not sure I can think of an easy/accurate way to detect if the filament is stuck. The mechanics of what you’d be looking for are different depending on why the filament is stuck. A tangled spool will look different from a jammed extruder.

I agree with @rocketsled. I think you are already printing spool centre weights? You’ll also want long necked AMS savers and keep in mind that you need to massage refills after installation in the spool.
Since you have probably not yet completed Spool Centre containers and AMS savers, keep in mind that you can print them from the rear spool. Make sure to feed via a short PTFE rather than only the coupler as there’s another entanglement risk otherwise (amhik).

Thanks for the responses guys… I usually get a notification when the filament runs out so I thought this would behave in the same way. You are probably right… perhaps the filament was still in the feed tube and that explains the problem.

I was feeding via the manual spool holder outside the AMS. Also using a HF nozzle, though not sure if that had anything to do with it.
