I have searched to see if there is anything similar and didn’t find anything but that may be because I don’t know what this effect is called.
I have been printing with Bambu ABS material to make some centre caps for my Caterham 7 and I have been getting mixed results. Of 8 printed units, 3 have worked, i.e. they are flat and printed to the correct dimensions. I ran one more through the printer this morning, I had no errors but went to the garage to find the item in the pictures. The nozzle and ceramic heater are toast (literally).
I have used standard settings for the material i.e. 270 to 280 nozzle temp, 90 textured plate temp etc. A few other settings:
Layer Height 0.12
No Ironing
inner/outer wall
4 wall loops
35% infill generally
75% infill for the legs using cylinder modifiers.
outer wall 40mm/s
inner wall 75mm/s
infill and top surface 100mm/s
travel 500mm/s
Any obvious things a newbie needs to know to avoid the lava type overflow?

Neat looking project.
Have you checked the SD card to see if you have a video of the failure?
To me it looks like the part released from the plate and was dragged around by the nozzle.
FYI
“Only one wall on first layer” will give you a cleaner first layer on a textured plate.

Thank you, I will check for a video now. I didn’t use any glue which I have seen others talk about so that may be it.
Personally I don’t use glue when I print ABS. For me the important part is keeping the plate clean. Oils from your hands really affect adhesion. Hot water and dish soap to clean the plate. Give it a good scrub and be sure not to touch the build plate afterwards.
Pre heating the chamber will also help to minimise warping and maximize adhesion.
- Turn the bed on full (100-120c depending if you have 220/110v)
- Home the machine (to bring the bed to the top)
- Turn on the aux fan so it will blow across the top of the hot bed.
This will get you a chamber temp or 45-50ish in about 10-15 minutes.

You may have lost the thermistor or heater but the nozzle can be saved. If you have a hot air gun just put it gently in a vice or secure it and heat it up. The pla will come off.
That’s if you want to mess with it.

Thank you for all the replies and advice.
I put a new nozzle and thermistor in the machine today, cleaned the base with soapy water and it printed perfectly. As Jon suggested, I checked the SD card for a video and the object had moved with the nozzle. I will also try one with one external wall to see how much better it looks.
