Nozzle repeatable clogged, stop extruding

Hi, I have a problem with extruding filament. During printing, the nozzle gets clogged and stops printing, but after a few layers it starts printing again. I have tried replacing the filament and nozzle and cleaning the extruder several times and the problem still persists.It happens with pla and petg i tried 3 different manufacturers.
I would be happy for advice, thank you.


Did you try to adjust the filament printing temperature? It looks as if the temperature is too high causing clogs… another reason could be over extrusion.

I would recommend you to do a filament calibration first.

How did you clean the nozzle and extruder gears? I have found that only the hex key method works reliably if repeated a few times.

As for the extruder, that is more tiresome, but if that is the source of contamination, you need to clean the gears and check for wear thoroughly.

Also, check your PTFE’s and try printing from the rear spool holder to help pinpoint the issue.

Other possible (but less likely) causes are related to incorrect temp readings (thernal grease, damaged connector, board).

I keep printing at the same settings, it started happening in the middle of the filament roll, I tried calibrating it several times, but the result is still the same.

Perhaps the nozzle has warped. How long have you been using this nozzle?

I tried cleaning it in cold pull and with the needle that came with the printer, I took the whole extruder apart and checked it, it didn’t seem like anything was wrong, but I ordered a new one. The problem is in the nozzle, it always gets stuck there and has to be cleaned. Even after replacing the nozzle with the hotend.

There is a new nozzle, it happened with the old one and now with the new one

yes the old nozzle is hardened steel and the new one too

Since you have the problem with two different nozzles, it is most likely an issue with the filament friction in the PTFE’s, the extruder (spring and/or gears and or travelling contamination) or a difference between the actual and the measured temp of the nozzles (wiring connector or TH board).

For the first 2, I already indicated troubleshooting.

For the latter, you could try double checking nozzle temp with a contactless thermometer. Without one, you could try increasing the nozzle temp by 10°. Note that this is not a remedy, merely an indicative diagnostic tool. Root causes will not get better with time.

It is not a fix. More of a diagnostic. If it helps, then there’s a good chance that there’s something wrong with the TH board or its connectors.

so I increased the temperature and it’s still the same but I noticed that it only does it during printing. When I cancel the print and try to extrude the filament manually, it works normally.

That is actually a good sign. A TH board replacement is one of the more troublesome items.

Do you have the problem when printing from the rear spool holder or only when printing from the AMS?

I think you’ll need to provide more detailed answers to the initial questions such as actual print temps and unclogging, cleaning methods and how often that was done, PTFE check done Y/N, as well as additional info on the manual feed through the PTFE or straight into the extruder,…

Hi! Do you have any progress with your issue? I’ve got almost the same problem.

So here I am with the solution I got a new extruder and everything is working as it should. There was no visible wear on the old extruder but it was still causing a problem.
