I’m looking for a candidate for my fourth printer. I jump between p2s and x2d. I already have Two P1s and one P2s + Four AMS units. I’m wondering if it’s possible to use two nozzles (for multi-color printing) in an X2D with just one AMS unit. Without using an external spool (cabinet space limitations). Do there have to be two independent filament sources (external spool/second AMS)?

BUT… A single AMS only has one output so you would lose a lot of the time savings that a independent dual nozzle system provides. The only advantage is the lower amount of purging you would need to do over a single nozzle system.
I just got my X2D on Sunday and two feed sources are absolutely needed to utilize both nozzles there is a dual buffer on the rear and if you look at the photos the darker top PTFE tube and buffer is for left primary nozzle and the lighter PTFE tube on the bottom buffer is for the right auxiliary nozzle. The Filament Track Switch allows the switch between feed sources either straight through or cross over.
In fact, such a system using two filaments with a single AMS and a Filament Path Switcher would be faster than changing the right nozzles of the H2C. The hotends themselves wouldn’t need to be mechanically changed, and the filament would remain in the melting chamber when the nozzle is inactive, just like with the H2C.
And the best part: it would only require a software update.
I would welcome this option …
The filament track switch supports one AMS in, utilizing both outputs, out of the box. No special update needed.
I believe it is bullet point three in the products page description section, to the right of the product picture…
On a side note (not referencing the original question poster themselves), any use of the filament switch requires filament to be pulled back to somewhere before the switch’s input no matter how many AMS’s are used. With only one AMS, it will need to retract somewhat further…not considering how many more AMS’s are upstream in a multi unit setup, with how many more splitters/4in1’s.
In my OPINION, I personally, do not rate that as a significant downside. (Clearly other people do…I’m sure that to some of them having an opinion different than theirs means they think I should die slowly and painfully or some other nasty thing. But so be it.)
I just installed the FTS about an hour ago and I can assure you that it has two inputs and two outputs
I’m not sure who your reply is directed to, but I don’t believe that was ever in question…
I have two FTS’s and also can verify there are two inputs and two outputs on them…matching the product photos which clearly also show the same…

So it is not possible to operate one ams with a double nozzle…
You can but you won’t get the speed boost a dual nozzle provides with dual feed sources.

As Shawn said, You can use one AMS and an track switch to feed both nozzles, but it will have to fully retract between nozzle changes which will greatly increase the print time.
One nice benefit with the x2d is once it loads both two nozzles, or makes one filament change in the print, they stay loaded and it’s much quicker to switch back and forth.
You’d be better off running 1ams to the left nozzle, at a loose spool hanging on the side of the printer for the aux nozzle.
Yes I did it. I printed same model 3 times.
First with all 3 model PLA color in AMS. 1st and 3rd most used color in main head. And the 2nd most used (Gingerbread Dragon) white color on aux head. When completed with 1st color (on model brown) the pull back those from primary head and just push back the white 2ndary color to the aux head. Just those pull back and push the other color repeated.
Not need to clear filament (generate brown-white or white-brown poops) and save time with missing clean filament from head process. Of course when reach eye black the 3rd color those are not avoid able on the main head.
I give it a try with 2nd color on external spool but those little failed due the humidity issues appeared (room humidity 31% so not expected) due missing drying on the external spool. So better if you print with any multiple AMS with X2D (example one AMS 2 Pro and one AMS HT for special materials)
I tried as you did that one nozzle with Ams and other nozzle with aux head but i always get error that is “0500-4014- 181023 - Slicing for the print job failed “. How can i fix that?
